Heather Storgaard learned a thing or two at The Westfjords Residency.

"Forget the knitwear and toy puffins – spontaneity and the acceptance of winter is the most important thing I aim to take home from Iceland."

Photographs: Heather StorgaardText: Heather StorgaardWinter in Iceland’s Westfjords is a lesson in embracing nature’s rhythm. With long darkness and fleeting sunlight, life moves slowly, guided by the weather. Icelanders embrace rare daylight, celebrate the sun’s return, and find joy in the No...

According to the old Norse calendar, Þorri month is soon coming to an end, and Góa is coming up! Over the past four weekends, celebrations have been in full swing, with plenty of traditional delicacies enjoyed along the way. A typical Þorrablót menu might include ram testicles cured in lactic acid, flamed lamb heads, head cheese, fermented shark, dried haddock, smoked lamb, liver sausage, sheep’s loins wrapped in cured meat, and whale blubber pickled in sour milk. Tempting, isn’t it?

Fishing communities are the heart and soul of Iceland. For centuries, cod has been the driving force of our economy, shaping our livelihoods and sustaining entire towns. From rugged fjords to busy harbors, generations of fishermen have braved the North Atlantic—not just for tradition, but because fishing keeps Iceland running. Next time you enjoy Icelandic seafood, remember the hard work behind every catch.

Waking up to an iceberg floating past your kitchen window isn’t an everyday sight around here—but it’s not unheard of either. A quiet reminder that the Arctic Circle is less than 10 km to the north of the Westfjords.

"Nýp, located in western Iceland, features a jet-black cabin built on the foundations of a former sheep shed, containing an artist’s studio for the residency programmes and guesthouse overlooking the Breiðafjörður fjord. The cabin’s simple volume and off-centre pitched roof nod to the area’s agricultural buildings and mountain peaks."
