Ingolfur Arnarson, the first settler of Iceland (according to Landnama, the Book of Settlement), built his farm on the peninsula where the city stands today. The book says that Arnarson decided the location of his settlement using a traditional Norse method. He cast his high seat pillars into the ocean when he saw the coastline, then he settled where the pillars came to shore. The town got its name “Smoky Bay” (Reykjavik) after the columns of steam that rose from the hot springs in the area and made such a deep impression on the first settlers.

Top 5 picks for things to do immediately after landing in Keflavik airport, giving you a head start on your itinerary.
#1 The Blue Lagoon - A dip in the Blue Lagoon's warm, geothermally heated waters and a replenishing silica face mask are just the ticket to a dehydrated, tired traveller.
#2 Bridge Between Continents - Just a short drive from the airport, you can stand on this metal bridge which straddles the gap between the Eurasian and North American plates, growing at about 2.5cm every year.
#3 Viking World - This fascinating museum, just a few kilometres from Keflavik airport, is home to a replica of the Gokstad ship, called Islendingur (the Icelander).
#4 Brimketill - Erosion by the waves that batter the wild Reykjanes coast has carved a natural pool out of the lava at Brimketill. It's best viewed on a calm day at low tide, as you'll see more of the rock and get a much better sense of the pool's shape.
#5 Icelandic Rock and Roll Museum - You'll have the chance to find out about some of Iceland's most talented singers and groups, try playing the drums or guitar and belt out your favourite Icelandic hits in the museum's karaoke booth. If you're a fan of Björk, Sigur Rós, Daỗi Freyr or Of Monsters and Men, you won't want to miss this.

Top 10 Iceland waterfalls 🤯

1. Dynjandi, in the remote Westfjords, Dynjandi stands as a cascading series of waterfalls, with the main drop resembling a bridal veil. The journey to this secluded gem is as rewarding as the sight itself, offering peace and solitude.
2. Svartifoss, known as the “Black Falls,” Svartifoss is famous for the striking black basalt columns that frame it. This otherworldly waterfall, located in Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park, inspired the design of Reykjavík’s Hallgrímskirkja church.
3. Skógafoss, legend has it that a treasure chest is hidden behind its mighty cascade. Climb the steep staircase to the top for a panoramic view of the surrounding landscapes.
4. Dettifoss, is 2nd Europe’s most powerful waterfall, and the ground trembles as you approach it.
5. Goðafoss, “Waterfall of the Gods,” is where the old Norse gods were allegedly cast into the waters. Its horseshoe-shaped cascade is a symbol of Iceland’s conversion to Christianity over a thousand years ago.
6. Gullfoss, nestled in the Hvítá river canyon. Feel the mist on your face as you stand on the viewing platform, taking in the sheer force of nature.
7. Hengifoss, located in eastern Iceland, is one of the country’s tallest waterfalls at 128 meters (420 feet). Known for its striking red clay and basalt layers, it offers a scenic hike and views of the smaller Litlanesfoss waterfall along the trail.
8. Kirkjufell, located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in western Iceland.
9. Seljalandsfoss offers this unique experience. A short hike takes you behind the thundering curtain of water, providing a magical and surreal perspective. Don’t forget your raincoat.
10. Háifoss, “High Waterfall,” and it lives up to its name, plummeting from a height of 122 meters. Located near the Hekla volcano, the dramatic scenery here is enhanced by the rugged, rocky cliffs surrounding it.

Save this post because you don’t wanna miss them when you in Iceland. 💦

01/06/2024

On May 29, a new fissure eruption began on the Reykjanes Peninsula, northeast of Sýlingarfell. The scene was reminiscent of past eruptions in the area. Despite the fiery display, air traffic to and from Iceland continued without disruption, and the country remained a safe and welcoming destination for visitors. Life carried on as usual, with all services operating smoothly.

The eruption’s impact was confined to the immediate area around the fissure, leading to some road closures. Authorities promptly closed the entire affected region to traffic to ensure safety. Yet, beyond the localized disruption, the rest of Iceland remained untouched by the volcanic activity, offering its usual charm and beauty to travelers. For more details, visit www.visiticeland.com

15/05/2024

The Midnight Sun in Iceland is a natural phenomenon that occurs during the summer months, especially around the summer solstice in late June. During this period, the sun sets very late and rises again shortly after, creating prolonged daylight hours. In the northernmost parts of Iceland, the sun doesn’t set at all for several weeks.

1. **Extended Twilight:** During the Midnight Sun, the period between sunset and sunrise is filled with a prolonged twilight, giving the sky a mesmerizing array of colors. Sunsets and sunrises blend together in a seamless transition, creating a continuous spectacle of warm hues.

2. **Sunset Timings:** In late June, around the summer solstice, the sun in Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital, sets around midnight and rises again around 3 a.m. However, due to the continuous light, the horizon merely dips below the skyline, offering an extended, breathtaking view of the sunset colors.

3. **Sunrise Timings:** Just a few hours after the sun sets, it begins to rise again, creating another beautiful display. The sky never fully darkens, allowing visitors to experience a unique and serene atmosphere throughout the night.

Experiencing the Midnight Sun

Outdoor Activities: The extended daylight hours provide ample opportunity for outdoor activities such as hiking, sightseeing, and exploring nature. Popular spots include the Golden Circle, waterfalls like Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss, and the coastal cliffs at Dyrhólaey.

Photography: The soft, diffused light during the Midnight Sun is perfect for photography, offering stunning opportunities to capture Iceland’s dramatic landscapes.

Cultural Significance: The Midnight Sun has cultural significance in Iceland, with celebrations and festivals marking the summer solstice. Locals and tourists alike enjoy the endless daylight, participating in events, bonfires, and gatherings.

In summary, the Midnight Sun in Iceland transforms sunsets and sunrises into a magical, nearly continuous experience, highlighting the country’s natural beauty in a truly unique way.
