Here are our 5 favorite activities for a winter trip to Iceland
🧊Ice Cave Tour
You can visit two ice caves on the South Coast. One is Katla Ice Cave, accessible year round and is more black and white, black due to volcanic ash. Another is Crystal Blue Ice Cave open for visit only from October until April, it has white and blue color. The ice cave tour takes around 3 hours and includes a super jeep transfer to the glacier, instructions from the guide, and time in the ice cave.
🌌Northern Lights Tour
Northern lights are visible in Iceland from late August until early April. They are very active this winter season. So coming to Iceland in February or March will be good for having enough daylight for the activities and enough darkness for the northern lights. You can go hunting on your own or join a tour from Reykjavik.
🛁Geothermal Spa Visit
Nothing beats a good relaxation after a day of exploring. Iceland has numerous geothermal spas, pools, and even a geothermal waterfall. Seven spas with facilities are within one hour drive from Reykjavik. Don’t forget to book in advance.
🐋Whale watching
Faxafloi Bay near Reykjavik is the best place for whale watching with good chances to spot humpback whales in winter. From the end of February it is possible to take a whale watching tour from the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. The most special thing about this location is the chance to see killer whales migrating in winter and spring.
🥾Glacier hiking
Glacier Hiking is a year-round activity in Iceland, but the color of the ice makes it more spectacular in the winter season. During winter months the ice is not melting and has a brighter blue color than in summer. All the equipment for the hike is provided by the operator.
