Today was the first of the monthly training days I am organising this year. The weather was not really optimal but we went over a number of things that are essential to successfully guiding ice climbing tours, including client safety, anchor options, belay strategies, coaching beginner ice climbings, and self belays -- because sometimes just climbing out yourself is just the most efficient way.
Here's Jan, who has clearly done this before too.
Today illustrated one of the many reasons why we drive heavily modified vehicles 😅
A little self belay climbing to lead my clients out of a moulin we had rappelled into, capping off two very adventurous days on the glacier.
How do you like the view?
COVID Challenge #3: Jeep Gym
The floor is lava. All you have is your vehicle. GO!
COVID Challenge #2: Put on your rain gear! 🌧
Here's another fun challenge. The Icelandic weather changes so quickly, if you're too slow with putting on your rain gear it might be over already! So this time we try to put on our rain gear in less than one minute - and to make it more fun, you're not allowed to put anything on the ground 🙃

The Crampon Challenge
Here's a fun little challenge for my fellow guide friends and anybody else who is stuck at home and owns a pair of crampons!
I'm guessing with a little practice it should be doable in under 40 seconds. Post your videos in the comments, or tag @stepman on Instagram and add #cramponchallenge :)
Pro tip: heavy snowfall and slow motion video make an amazing combination! To achieve the best effect, have some distance between you and the main subject and zoom in (that’s where the 2x lens in the iPhone 11 Pro comes in handy). More distance, more snowflakes!
Warning: this is a long post. Yesterday was the day of our guide assessment, and everybody was looking forward to a celebratory burger afterwards, but all thoughts of food and tiredness vanished when we got the call for a mass casualty incident nearby. SAR members and mountain guides from local companies converged on site within an amazingly short time, and we got everybody to safety as more and more rescue personnel arrived.
Sometimes people say they could never do these things. That they would be too afraid they could do something wrong. And I would lie if I said I wasn’t also scared of what may await. Will I be able to help? How do I make order from the chaos that surrounds such accident sites? But one pushes forward. Training kicks in. Ensure safety. Size up what’s going on. Prioritize. Treat what you can. Stabilize. Provide shelter. Every decision becomes obvious, the fear is gone.
People’s lives are saved.
Next time I’ll be almost as scared of what may be ahead of us. But a little less.
We all want to help. It’s in our DNA. It’s what makes us human.

Just couldn’t resist those waves of clouds sloshing down the mountain in front of our kitchen window. Bonus: horses! :D
