🌊 Did you know killer whales are known as the "wolves of the sea"? As apex predators, they have no natural enemies and are known for their teamwork in pods when hunting. The purest giggle in the world. Someone had asked our guide how to identify species if you only see the dorsal fin briefly...so you can here her answer, but we left the sound on so you can hear a customer say "oooh stop it" and giggle with pure joy at the sight of these two whales diving together. Seeing whales in their natural habitat is once-in-a-lifetime, bucket-list moment for so many people. But I'll let you into a secret. We've seen a thousand whales diving, and they still amaze us. It is always magical. Every. Single. Time. Have you ever taken a selfie with a humpback whale?! This beautiful creature was relaxing next to super yacht for ages! Giving everyone plenty of time to take some incredible photos and videos. Being able to read the body language of the whale is crucial: A calm whale is a happy whale which is exactly what we want to see! #humpback #whaleselfie #whalewatching #iceland #whale #magicalmoments
Do you ever get the feeling you are being watched? This gorgeous humpback whale was just relaxing next to the boat, totally at ease, and checked us out as much as we checked it out . Don't worry, despite their size they are very gentle and non-aggressive. They are very clever and have clear indicators of culture. We like to think they have got to know our yacht - as we get to recognise individual whales - and know that we are always very chilled out, just like them! #humpback #whalewatchingiceland #iceland #whale #yacht Video by @luckynotlost
This minke whale surprised us all, popping its head right out of the water in front of us. See how the front of its head (rostrum) is very pointed. It's name in Latin actually refers to that - Balaenoptera acutorostrata - winged whale with a pointed about! This sleek shape means it cuts through the water easily, and can get up to 40kph! This video was taken by one of our lovely customers on the yacht Amelia Rose, here in Reykjavik, Iceland. #minkewhale #whalewatching #iceland #yacht
Sometimes words can't describe an experience. This whale we call bad jelly after a dolphin in NZ with a similar dorsal fin split. We first found it in the heavy fog this morning, and it was very relaxed, but this afternoon it was in such a curious mood, circling the boat - sticking its head out of the water for a better look! It was a breath-taking experience and we are so privileged to have been there. Look out for the ventral pleats on its throat allowing it to feed on huge amounts of tiny fish at once. #humpbacks #eyetoeye #whalehellothere
Orcas in Reykjavik! Icelandic killer whales came and investigated us when we were busy having a close up encounter with a friendly humpback. It was a really special day on the water today; Firstly the sea was like glass, which almost never happens here. Then there was a thin layer of mist at the waters surface and another above us, making it seem like we were sailing out into a different world. Amongst this ethereal beauty we found two humpback whales, and one was happily surfacing and floating around the yacht. So close we could see every tubercle on its rostrum! (Every hair follicle on its nose) Then, out of the corner of our eye we saw this huge orca fin. It's a sight to behold. In captivity the fin flops over (don't go somewhere with captive cetaceans please) but in the wild they stand straight and tall, cutting through the water effortlessly. The was a male and a female, swimming together peacefully. Not disturbed by the boats, just relaxed. It was a truly breathtaking experience! To cap it all amongst all the puffins on the way home we found white beaked dolphins hunting! What a day! #orca #orcasofinstagram #killerwhale #wildwhales #iceland #reykjavik #orcaisland
Humpback whale swims right under the bow of our superyacht! It was a wet and windy day on Faxaflói, despite a lovely weather forecast, and our gorgeous yacht Amelia Rose cut through the waves easily. We saw a huge blow ahead of us and could tell from the shape of the blow it was a big humpback whale. Approaching it slowly at first - we never want to disturb our whales from that natural activities - we stopped a little way away to watch it...but the whale had other ideas!! It came and circled the boat, coming right next to us, along the port bow and finally right under the front. What an incredible sight! We radioed the other whale watching boat and left them to enjoy this incredibly curious and chilled out whale. We try to never anthropomorphise whales, but sometimes their personalities are so clear. This one with the straight dorsal fin that looks like it's been snipped off is always very very calm. #humpback #superyacht #seatripsreykjavik #iceland #reykjavik #icelandicwhales #closeencounter #whalehellothere #icelandwhalewatching video by @luckynotlost
What's the difference between a breach and a lazy breach? A full breach is considered to be when over 40% of the whale is out of the water, and a lazy breach when less than 40%. Here we see a full breach surprise us, within just a few metres of the boat, followed in quick succession by a lazy breach. We had spotted a blow further towards the aptly named Hvalfjörður (whale fjord) and we're making our way towards it on our superyacht Amelia Rose when this beautiful humpback whale took to the air ahead of us!
