Secret Solstice is an Icelandic music festival in it’s fourth year that will take place on the 15th – 18th of June 2017. It showcases both established artists as well as exciting up-and-coming talent over the course of three days in the 24 hour midnight sun during the summer solstice. The festival is themed after the Norse religion and mythology of old and along with our side-event it’s been described as “one of the most unique events in the world”.

Iceland Airwaves has a no return policy for international artists. This means that international artists can only play the festival once. This does not include The Faroe Islands or Greenland because they're kind of like our siblings.

As blockbuster movies get progressively bigger – and oftentimes longer – than movies released even a few years ago, one of the things that has changed is where they film. In the early days of Hollywood, movies were largely confined to sound stages with sets standing in for real or imagined locations. While sound stages are still an integral part of filmmaking, especially with the expanded use of green screen, many filmmakers travel around the globe to find the right locations for their movies.

One recent example of that is Fast & Furious 8, which became the first major studio movie to film in Cuba after the travel ban to that country was eased. It also filmed in Iceland, bringing that country its “largest explosion ever.” If anyone can top that explosion, though, it is Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder.

Snyder is also directing Batman V Superman‘s follow up with next year’s Justice League, and despite the director reigning in some of his “flourishes” for the upcoming movie, there is no doubt that it will still feature plenty of over-the-top action sequences. According to the official travel guide site (via ComicBook.com), some of those action sequences will be taking place in the Westfjords of Iceland, where the Justice League crew will be filming in October through November. The primary set will be in Iceland’s Djúpavík village, which the travel guide notes has only two permanent residents, though there are usually more in the summer.

The village will certainly see a population spike during the next two months, since approximately 200 crew members are expected to take residence there during Justice League‘s filming. Some of those crew members will be staying in a local hotel, while others will be housed onboard a nearby cruise ship. How the infrastructure of a town usually containing two people will handle the influx of over 200 more is not mentioned, but no doubt that was worked out ahead of time between the local government and the movie’s producers and helped along by the substantial amount of spending that their presence will bring to the area.

It’s worth noting that Djúpavík is a coastal village that was originally settled around a herring salting factory, which closed down over half a century ago but has been preserved. Since there’s one particular member of the Justice League who likes the ocean and knows a lot about fish, Djúpavík will probably be the location used for the fishing village scene we saw in the Comic-Con trailer.

WINTER DRIVING URGENT !!!

If you are planning on driving in Iceland during wintertime, PLEASE PLEASE get advice from your car rental people.
Iceland is a harsh place, our winters are hard and cold and many roads can get impassable in just a few minutes.

Even if the sun is shining and the weather looks beautiful, the wind can blow the snow in large heaps on the roads which make it very hard to drive.
Recent events have shown that if people run of the icy road or get stuck in the snow they may have to wait quite a long time for someone to help them if there is no danger to the people.
The police and rescue teams in Iceland ONLY help if there is danger to the people themselfes, you will have to call private companies to get them to help you at high cost to yourself.

Make sure your rental car has winter tires, ask your car rental for phone numbers you can call if you get into trouble and make sure you have warm clothes, a shovel and something to drink and eat in the car if you are planning on driving outside the cities in Iceland because if you get into trouble you may have to wait for several hours before someone rescues you.

If you are driving in cities and towns and your car gets stuck, usually the locals will help you get the car loose, but if you are unable to get help, leave the car and head for the next gas station or cafe and wait it off, be prepared that the car might get towed away if it blocks traffic or snow movers, contact the police if that happens to find out where you can get your car.
The law in Iceland is, that if a car is towing another car, the towing car is responisble for any damages that may occur on the towed car, because of these laws some icelanders are hesitant of towing stuck cars, since it could cost them large amounts if the towed car gets damaged, please respect this fact and dont get annoyed if someone, even driving a large truck is not ready to tow your car.
Sometimes a light push is enough to get your car unstuck, and icelanders usually do not hesitate to stop, get out of their cars and push other peoples cars, pay it forward and do the same, it gets your blood flowing and brings a smile to everyones faces.
