My favourite photo from the recent mission. Tidied up by photographer extraordinaire . climbing up an upper step of our new route up the south face Hrútsfjallstindur. It was taken just as the spindrift started to envelope us and before long we were in a full whiteout.

Pulling a sled all day is an arduous task at the best of times but it’s a lot better than carrying it all on your back. For the winter crossing we took enough food and fuel to last us for 18 days in case of any big storms forcing us to shelter and wait. These sleds weighed more than 50kg each and in some snow conditions were incredibly difficult to move at all. It’s not all skiing and having fun up on the ice cap. When you stop moving for the day then the real work starts. Because it is so exposed the wind can tear through your camp so when high winds were forecast we needed to build a good storm camp. We used saws to cut snow bricks and created a shelter wall that surrounded our tents. This dream like landscape really stood out for me. Arguably the best angle to see Snæfell (1833m) from. It stands out so majestically here and feels somehow not quite real.
