The current eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula seems to be over. The beginning was powerful; the lava flow reached 100 cubic meters per second, but after a few days, the eruption dried up.

Is this the latest volcanic eruption in this shock to the region, or are more doses expected? This will probably become clear in the coming days and will depend, among other things, on whether land uplift at the Svartsengi area near the Blue Lagoon will resume, as has happened since 2021.

THE ERUPTION CONTINUES ON THE REYKJANESS PENINSULA

A 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) fissure eruption began in Iceland on Monday, December 18, at 10:17 p.m. This is the fourth eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula during the last three years. The area was previously evacuated, and the eruption did not threaten people.
Air traffic to Iceland operates as usual. Iceland's Keflavik International Airport (KEF) is operating normally. All flights are currently performed as scheduled. The effects of volcanic eruptions are usually limited to a specific localized area near the eruption site. The situation is constantly being monitored.

An eruption started between Sýlingarfell and Hagafell at 10pm. An earthquake swarm started in the magma intrusion north of Grindavík around one hour earlier. There is a risk of lava flowing to Grindavík, says Kristín Jónsdóttir of the Icelandic Met Office. The worst possible location, say Þorva...

Vaxxed? Iceland Actually Wants You to Come to Be a Tourist.

Iceland is one of the few countries that is welcoming vaccinated visitors now. It makes sense that Iceland is opening up, given how much the nation's economy relies on tourism.

This welcoming of tourism is exciting news because it means we can start cautiously stepping back into the activities we loved, pre-pandemic, like travel (to places like Iceland that give the green light). The moonscape mountains, crater lakes, and steamy lagoons. There’s something so austerely enchanting about its landscape that makes it the perfect COVID-19 reset, be it with friends, a partner, or riding solo.
