Arriving at the hut Bólstaður in Einhyrningsflatir last summer. Beautiful glacial view. Later that night all the horses somehow escaped the fence and we had to look for them in the dark. After catching one horse we decided to walk back to the fence with him to put a saddle on to be able to gather the rest but that turned out to be unnecessary since the whole herd of 60 horses followed him all the way back and into the fence. Unbelievable night.

Walking through a lava field close to Hekla, a volcano that has been very active throughout history. The most recent eruptions were in 2000, 1991 and 1980, so she is said to be overdue 🌋 recorded eruptions date back to 1104. Some eruptions have lasted a week when others have gone on for years and she has always been considered unpredictable. We ride past Hekla and more volcanoes on our ‘Sleeping dragons’ tours.

When we ride for several hours we like to take breaks for the horses. The herd has a rest and a snack and the riders get to catch their breath and enjoy astonishing scenery. Today the horses were extremely calm due to warm weather so we stopped for a while, had lunch and enjoyed life. Thanks for great times guys who joined this sleeping dragons tour and see you next summer 😊

Yesterday we rode from Ásgarður around Kerlingarfjöll to Leppistungur reaching an altitude of 1000m. Sunny and clear weather so we could see Langjökull, Hofsjökull and Vatnajökull glaciers on the way.

Look at this path that has been carved into the rock hard basalt by the hooves of thousands of horses through the centuries. How many hoofbeats would this take?

Riding trails around Iceland, both in the populated areas and up in the highlands, are an important and perhaps underestimated part of the history and culture of Icelanders. Many of these trails were discovered soon after settlement in the 9th century and served a major role in the formation of the Icelandic Commonwealth. Other trails were established by sheep herders or by other necessities in the nations’ struggle for existence throughout the centuries...

The elven valley "Gjáin" in Þjórsárdalur. This is one of our favourite spots to take a break from riding and letting the horses catch their breath on the Sleeping Dragons tour.
