Last night at 23:14, the 7th eruption of 2024 (10th since 2021) began on the Reykjanes Peninsula. A 2.5 km fissure opened near Grindavík, catching many by surprise, as experts had expected this to happen closer to mid-December.
Magma had been accumulating 4-5 km beneath Svartsengi for weeks, but the sudden eruption reminds us how unpredictable nature can be.
Thankfully, everyone was evacuated safely from Grindavík, the Svartsengi Power Plant, and The Blue Lagoon. Lava has crossed the road to Grindavík, cutting power, but the rest of Iceland is unaffected. Life continues as usual, and Keflavík Airport is operating as normal with no disruption to flights.
The eruption site is closed for safety, but this incredible natural event can be admired from a distance. Please remember to respect safety guidelines and stay clear of restricted areas.
