Situated in the neighbouring region of Basilicata, this Troglodyte town is now a UNESCO world heritage site. Considered as slums in the 1950s and called ‘Italy’s shame’, the caves inhabited by locals and their animals were cleared and their owners rehoused in high rise apartments in the suburbs. Of late, many of the ‘Sassi’ have been reclaimed, restructured and refurbished. You will now find boutique hotels, Air B&Bs, stylish bars and restaurants where once there were hovels. Well worth the 90 minute journey from Alberobello, the town has been the backdrop for the James Bond film ‘No Time to Die’ and Mel Gibson’s ‘The Passion of the Christ’. Within the caves you will find ancient churches, cathedrals and places of worship as well as ancient cave artwork.

Every year, dance groups from around the world gather in Alberobello for this festival. It lasts three days and is a highlight for locals and holiday makers alike. This traditional dance from Alberobello dates back to the 18th/19th Century at a time where the trulli were inhabited by impoverished agricultural and farm workers often with their animals. Saturday nights would see the local people gather in the streets and squares close to their houses to celebrate the end of another tough working week, raise a glass and have a good time together. The dance is called ‘The Dance of the Lovers’ and only engaged couples were allowed to take part due to the close proximity of male and female dancers (for those times at least!). But, rest assured, the mamme and nonne would be close by to make sure that ‘Bella figura’ (propriety) was adhered to!
