Completed in 1240, the BASILICA OF SAN DOMENICO - Bologna - shelters the remains of SAN DOMENICO, founder of the Dominican order. The chapel inside the Basilica houses the Saint's sarcophagus, designed by NICOLA PISANO. MICHELANGELO carved the angel on the right of the altar, and MOZART, who spent some time at the city's Music Academy, occasionally played the Basilica's organ.

PENTEDATTILO, Melito di Porto Salvo - Reggio Calabria - Italy, Calabria

Located on the MONTE CALVARIO - a mountain whose shapes once resembled that of FIVE FINGERS (whence the name, from the Greek penta + daktylos , meaning "five fingers"), Pentadàktilo was founded as a colony of the Greek city of CHALCIS, in 640 BC.

Severely damaged by an earthquake in 1783, the town remained TOTALLY UNINHABITED from the mid-1960 to the 1980s, when it was partially restored and repopulated by volunteers from across Europe.
