Still processing the last 4-5 days spent traversing the hills of Barolo and the Alta Langa on foot with , walking more than 50 kilometers through vineyards, chestnut and hazelnut groves, quiet little villages, and undulating hills and valleys in the Piedmont region of Italy. We arrived as a group of strangers and leave as new friends who feel more like family ❤️

This is my second trip with (after Calabria last year), and I’m so grateful for these opportunities that really don’t exist anywhere else on this scale, and for the apparent magic surrounding the factors which bring us together: kindness, warmth, a wicked sense of humor, respect, and overall an interest in traveling slowly on foot. The next-level wine, truffles and epic food help too! 🍷

I love the intuitive creative process of starting to research a brand new trip. It’s like dancing with a stranger—one you’ve been checking out on the sly for some time across the dancefloor. Ever since I followed the Aterno River valley on foot for 7 days from Sulmona to L’Aquila back in 2016 I’ve been longing to return to Abruzzo to explore the Campo Imperatore area below Gran Sasso mountain (at 2912m the highest peak in the Appenines). Happily I—finally—got to spend last week walking myriad paths steep and flat and high and low, and visiting as many hotels, agriturismi, restaurants, medieval castles, abandoned monasteries, weird refuges and oddball “arrosticini” joints as I could find scattered about the spectacular plateau above Santo Stefano di Sessanio. My kind of research literally involves plenty of legwork and trial-and-error; many times I had to turn back when a path simply disappeared in the dust, or a trail clearly marked on an old map failed to materialize in the field. But the evidence is clear: this part of Abruzzo is a remarkable and fascinating corner of the planet, perfectly suited to exploring on foot. It will take another round or two of research before I come up with my definitive journey through Abruzzo’s stunning landscapes—but I’m confident I’ll have the itinerary ready to roll for next summer. Bring on the Abruzzo Safari 2024 woohoo! Before settling down to the leisurely Calabrian dinner feast Ugo lays out on the terrace of his agriturismo, we work up an appetite by climbing the hill behind town, up to the ruins of Amendolea’s castle. Built in the 11th Century to defend the border between the territories of Reggio Calabria and Locri, the castle was abandoned after the devastating earthquake of 1783. The surrounding hamlet, on a plateau below the ramparts, was inhabited right up until the floods of 1953. Today the ruins are the domain of goats—and occasional madcap travellers like us who’ve walked for three days to access this utterly fascinating and unknown corner of Italy.⁠

In Amendolea we stay at Ugo’s Agriturismo, lording it from his shady terrace over the lush citrus groves laid out along the fiumara below. Ugo is a master-craftsman, the bergamot-whisperer: bergamot is the most valuable and sought-after citrus in the world, and grows only along this narrow coastal strip of southern Calabria and bits of Sicily across the strait. Its essential oil is a key secret ingredient in perfumes and fragrances, which means that major global perfume houses often come a knockin’ at Ugo’s door. To gain access they must first pass muster with Pasqualino—Ugo’s formidable donkey. He can be very picky.⁠

There are parts of Calabria that feel as far removed from the hugger-mugger of modern life as an Arctic ice floe. On Day 3 of our Aspromonte Safari we walk from the town of Bova, up on its hill, to the hamlet of Amendolea, a cluster of houses strung out along its eponymous river (called a fiumara) far below. The fiumara is a broad boulevard of bone-white boulders, curling and cornering from the high Aspromonte mountains all the way to the Ionian Sea. For most of the year it runs almost dry, but occasionally swells with winter flooding, frothing riverine thunder as the boulders rumble and roil downstream.⁠

Gola de Gorropu is the deepest gorge in Italy, its sheer walls rising a spectacular 500m above the Flumineddu River floor. We explore it on Day 3 of our Supramonte Safari, before climbing the Silana Pass to our hotel. I’ve walked up and over the top of the #monteamiata many times, silently with compass in hand, as part of the epic 3-week #viafrancigena hike from siena to rome. Or else just to burn off another superb meal at Il Silene in #pescina. #today, force majeure, I had to drive it instead #situazionidinecessita. But it turns out the ethereal beech forests were no less stunning, the winter light no less crystalline, the holy etruscan mountain no less sacrosanct.
