The first time I drove through many towns in this region I was disappointed by the sight of modern flats on the outskirts and if I had stayed in the car I may have never discovered the beautiful historic centres. Francavilla is a living working town with houses, flats, a hospital, businesses and shops. This is an important agricultural, industrial and business area with a population of around 37,000. To see the real heart of Francavilla's Historic centre it is best to park in the streets north of the castle and take a walk. You wont be disappointed. Francavilla Fontana is also called the "Imperiali Town" after the name of feudal lords that ruled the town from the end of 16th to 18th century. In 2009 it was awarded the “city of art” award by the Region. Over the past couple of years a great deal of work has been done in the historic centre to renovate the castle, clean the Mother Church and lift all the old limestone paving throughout the town to repair and relay it flat. The Giro d'Italia 2025 will pass through Francavilla Fontana and Oria on 13th May 2025. It is part of Stage 4 which runs from Alberobello to Lecce. The last time the Giro passed through Francavilla Fontana was in 2020, when we all had to wear masks.

At 6pm (18:00) a parade of befana on bicycles will travel along Viale Lila and Via Roma to Piazza Umberto where they will give away sweets and charcoal and a Pizzica group will perform.
Then around 7.30 pm the winner of the contest "The most beautiful showcase 2024" will be announced.
The antiques market will take place tomorrow morning in Viale Lilla.

Sunday 5th January.

From the morning along Viale Lilla the Befana market with lots of sweets to fill your stockings.

At 10.00 at Parco Caniglia there will be a stage "Aspettando la Befana" with games, group dances and shows for the youngest.

From 18.00 along Viale Lilla many nice Befana on bicycles distributing sweets to the children.

In Piazza Umberto I, a pizzica pizzica show.

During the evening the winners of the competition "The most beautiful window" will be announced.

Participation in all initiatives is free.
