Despite a few days of cold and rather damp weather the 2024 spring/summer season has finally got underway!! The clocks go forward an hour during the weekend so we can start to look forward to longer (sunnier) days….. and warmer evenings too!!

For the last couple of weeks since my trip to the Dolomites spring seems to have been on hold! That is until today. 🎉. 2 weeks of rain and unprecedented amounts of snow in the mountains and today back to what we call normal! Photos taken from Tignale on Lake Garda with all the snow on Monte Baldo.

Last week, on the last sunny day before the snow came, I took a trip to the Dolomites over the Passo Pordoi and down as far as Arabba. Since then we have had BIG SNOW and it‘s still coming down in the mountains with most places now buried under half a metre to 1 metre of snow!! So no shortage of snow and great skiing for all of March.

I'm sure that lots of you know that I live in Tignale on Lake Garda and, although a village above the lake, there is still plenty of tourism here. So an excuse to promote the hamlets of Tignale is always welcome.
So why spend your holiday in Tignale rather than on the lakeside. First of all, different people like different things. Here we have hotels, apartments, bars, restaurants etc like everywhere else. But we also have a lovely climate, a few degrees less than on the lakeside and certainly cooler in the hot summer evenings often with a slight breeze. For those that enjoy walking, there are many marked trails and also twice weekly accompanied walks. E-bikes, mountain bikes, adventure park, tennis - it's all here as is the shuttle bus throughout the summer going to the Tignale pebble beach.
Tignale has just been awarded the Orange Flag yet again by the Italian Touring club - the beauty of the landscape, genuine food including our own bio Olive Oil, and many activities some of them listed above are all important features to getting the Flag.

Even with all the above a lot of you want to combine the Tignale holiday with access to other villages round the lake and unless you have a car this can be challenging. Although no details have been released yet as to frequency and timing, we heard this week that from this summer 2024, the Navigarda ferry service will make a stop at the Tignale beach area opposite the Lemon House so it will be possible to have the best of both worlds. Out and about during the day, either locally or on a ferry and then back to the cooler, calmer village life in the evenings. Obvously the beach shuttle bus will be available to and from the ferry port.

So if you are looking for beautiful views and a relaxed atmosphere this summer just let me know. I work with Hotel Gallo and Park Hotel ZanZanu, both of which also have apartments, plus La Dolce Vita Relais a beautiful residence with wonderful views. It goes without saying that the hotels and several restaurants including a pizzeria are all able to cater for coeliacs - and have been doing so for years!

It's the time of the year when lots of people start thinking about summer holidays and where to go. In recent years Lake Garda seems to have become the most popular northern Italian lake but there is another one, Lake Maggiore, with probably less dramatic scenery but much 'softer' and greener and easily as beautiful.
The best known town on Lake Maggiore is Stresa with easy access by boat to the Borromeo islands, Isola Bella, Isola dei Pescatori and Isola Madre and a wonderful promenade with big imposing hotels on one side and the lake on the other.

At the northern end set in a beautiful garden and just a few metres from the lakeside is Hotel Royal. For me this hotel has a real wow factor, it is beautifully furnished with lots of quirky little corners and sitting areas throughout. The hotel has a bar, restaurant facing the garden for al fresco dining in the summer, a swimming pool in another hidden part of the garden and all rooms with balcony, some garden and mountain view and others towards the lake. There is also a roof top terrace with amazing views onto the lake and the islands.
The hotel caters for coeliacs and you can book either half board or just B&B as there are other restaurants in centre of Stresa that can cater for you all too.

One of the hotels on Lake Garda I feature in my website is Hotel Eden in Brenzone on the east side of the lake about 10 minutes by car south of Malcesine. This hotel is fully accredited with the Italian Coeliac Society and anyone who has stayed there has been well looked after.
The hotel is just above the lake and has a heated swimming pool, children's playground, small gym and probably best of all fantastic lake views whether from the bedroom balconies or the big terrace which is used for 'al fresco' dining in the summer. From the hotel there is an underpass rather than crossing the road and then a path down through the Belfiore Park Hotel garden to the private beach.
Rooms are on several floors served by a lift and the majority are lake view. The Superior rooms and Junior Suite Panorama are big enough to be used as family accommodation with a double bed and a sofa that lifts up to become bunks.
Now there is an added plus. Massimiliano, who up till recently ran the hotel as the manager, has bought the hotel so is now owner/manager. He has lots of ideas for the future so watch this space!
For those that are looking for a real wow factor hotel, check out Park Hotel Belfiore also run by Massimiliano and his partner Manuel. The hotel is right on the beach and now has an onsite restaurant which has just won a Michelin star!

Recently I have seen posts from so many people who travel to Lake Garda whatever the season. So for those that are thinking of visiting in the winter months this is for you! Winter is not hot here on the lake but throughout the winter we do have lots of warm sunny days. So the choice is yours whether you go sightseeing, visit Verona or even Venice or just sit on the apartment balcony relaxing and admiring the view!

Villa Canneto by La Paul is a small residence of just 9 studio apartments open 11 months of the year (No January) right by the lakeside on the Sirmione peninsular.

For visits during November, December, February and March choose between a studio Panorama with balcony and lake view - normally for 2 persons with a supplement for 3 but in this case 3 for the reduced price or a studio with balcony but no lake view.

The studios have a double bed, plus sofa bed in the larger ones, small kitchen with 2 induction rings, sink, fridge, microwave, kettle and a bathroom with shower. The residence is fully automated from the entrance barrier to the car park to a key card for the apartments.
Bed linen, towels, heating and cleaning costs are included in the price. So often people don't want to stay in an apartment for a short period as they need to go out and buy everything. NOT this time! Salt, sugar, oil etc are already in the apartment and for the first day you will find a tray with coffee/tea, milk, some brioche and bread and 2 eggs per person ready for your breakfast.

For those of you who can travel at end of September / beginning of October how about joining us in Tignale at our Truffle Festa next year! The first weekend was a great success so now on to the second one! And so many restaurants also serving special truffle menus.

Park Hotel ZanZanu in Tignale on Lake Garda.
It's never too early to think about a holiday and for those who need a gluten free diet (and maybe are vegetarian and even dairy free too) it can be a nightmare choosing the right place to go. I have a family who are regular visitors to Tignale and have now become good friends who are all of the above and are looked after beautifully here at Park Hotel ZanZanu.
Apart from the normal menu, every year they ask Luca the chef to cook them a special dinner and this year he did a full tasting menu which was exceptional. The photos are of the menu explaining each course and then photos of the dishes themselves.

Tignale village this morning! 2 days of festivities with flowers, paintings and stands selling cheese, salame, wine, grappa, limoncello and more! This evening a taste of summer with music and dancing in the square.
Anyone looking for a holiday with a village atmosphere but still close to Lake Garda?

Spring is on its way so what better time to think of a short break to Venice. During January Monica has done some refurbishment to the rooms and also recently added air conditioning.
Venice & Venice Rooms is on the first floor of an attractive building and has just 3 bedrooms, Torcello for max 3 persons, Burano and Murano each max 2 persons with their own private bathroom. Breakfast is not included but you will find a kettle, fridge and welcome tray in each room with some breakfast items and you have use of a fully equipped comunal kitchen and also a sitting area so that you can prepare meals 'at home' after a full day's sightseeting if you are too tired to go out one night.
If you are looking for more privacy, on the ground floor of the same building is the Zen House, an apartment with double bedroom, living/kitchen area and bathroom. The accommodation is just a few minutes walk from Rialto Bridge so very central.
