Life’s too short for boring tiles. At Casa Rosa, the living room’s balcony is emblazoned with colour and pattern thanks to these “cementine” that the Salento region is famous for. Sympathetically restored, they add that dash of whimsy to the everyday, that for us, is quintessential Lecce.
Encaustic cement tile making is seen in various forms around the world but those made in and around Lecce became famous for their unique use of pastel colour and bold pattern scale. Made by mixing coloured cement in moulds instead of decorating the surface of a ceramic tile, the raw material and dusty palette are irresistible.
