Andy Warhol's version of Last Supper, 1986.
In 1984, gallerist Alexandre Iolas commissioned Warhol to create a group of works based on Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper (1495-97) for an exhibition space in the Palazzo Stelline in Milan, located across the street from Santa Maria delle Grazie, home of Leonardo’s masterpiece. Warhol exceeded the demands of the commission and produced nearly 100 variations on the theme. Indeed, the extent of the series indicates an almost obsessive investment in the subject matter, which takes on an added significance in light of the revelation of the secret religious life revealed after Warhol’s death, which occurred only a month after the opening of the Milan exhibition in January 1987. The cycle also refers to the artist’s use of Leonardo’s Mona Lisa 20 years earlier, and to his series begun during the mid-1980s based on Renaissance and Modernist masterworks.
As he did with most subjects, Warhol approached The Last Supper through mediations of the original, working from a cheap black and white photograph of a widely circulated 19th-century engraving and a schematic outline drawing found in a 1913 Cyclopedia of Painters and Painting. The former served as model for the silkscreens, the latter for the so-called handdrawn paintings, which were made by tracing the simplified contours of the encyclopedia illustration as they were projected onto the canvas. While Warhol had practiced silkscreening since the early 1960s and throughout the ’70s, he took up tracing only in 1983 during his collaborations with artists Francesco Clemente and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Some compositions appropriate Leonardo’s entire pictorial design, while others explore details of individual figures and groups, singularly or in repetition, differing in orientation, scale, and color. This varied handling denies the visual unity of Leonardo’s exemplary demonstration of one-point perspective as well as the painting’s spiritual content by favoring a visual multiplicity and by including references to popular culture. Advertising logos for Wise Potato Chips, Dove Soap, and General Electric (a feature of Warhol’s pictures that can be traced back to his Campbell’s soup cans of the early 1960s) are superimposed on the figures of Christ and the Apostles, creating a hybrid of the sacred and profane, high art and commercial design. The seemingly heretical irreverence for these distinctions reflects the inevitable transformation of a deeply religious work into a cliché whose spiritual message has become muted through repetition. As Warhol’s final series,The Last Supper serves as a powerful reiteration of the principles that informed his entire artistic enterprise.

Michelin-star restaurant in Milan: ‘’Enrico Bartolini at Mudec’’
The only place in Milan with 3 Michelin stars. The famous restaurant located on the third floor of the MUDEC museum, which brought back to Milan the 3 Michelin stars, belongs to the “record” chef Enrico Bartolini, because no one has collected so many starred restaurants in so many parts of Italy like him. His cuisine is defined as “classical-contemporary” and offers dishes that have become classics, like the beetroot risotto with gorgonzola cheese sauce “Evolution”, always combined with the research for new recipes.
Our most favourite pizzeria in Milan: ‘’Da Zero’’
Our best advice for those who want the best pizza in Milan. If you believe that making a good pizza is an art and are looking for something special, then you are in the right place. Since 2014, the founders of the restaurant have been committed to following their passion of telling the story of Cilento (which is 150 km on the South from Naples) through pizza, carefully choosing the products related to its territory, with different “slow food” ideas, creating the perfect combination of “good and healthy”. Reachable from Duomo in 10-15 minutes walking. Reservations are recommended.
Only 10 minutes walk from Duomo, you can reach the greenest area of Milan: Sempione park (right behind Milan castle) with stunning view to the Arch of Peace. The Arch construction started in 1807 and completed only after 1838.
Our tips for a true Milanese culinary experience.
You may think that choosing a really good restaurant in Milan is not so easy, and in fact you are not wrong. With around 6000 dining options available, some guidance will surely help. Here are some basic rules (and of course, each rule has an exception…):
- Most restaurants around Duomo and Galleria are very touristy (which means that they are too expensive for what they offer or/and that the food quality is mediocre)
- If the restaurant has the photo of the food outside the entrance, don’t go there
- If outside the restaurant there is a guy who invites you inside, in most cases don’t go there
- If the restaurant serves a lot of different things (pizza, lobsters, steaks, pasta, fish…), don’t go there. Really good places always specialize just in several things.
- Most quality restaurants are open only for lunch and dinner (approximately from 12:30 till 14:30 and from 19:00 till 23:00) in all restaurants in Italy there is a so-called table fee which can range from 1 to 4 eur per person.
- In Milan (and other popular cities such as Rome, Venice, Florence…) it is always better to book the table in advance (and we will be happy to do it for you!)
- If you want to check some unbiased reviews, open TripAdvisor and see which rating Italians put. We are extremely picky about food.

Dedicated to the first king of the united Italian Republic, the Gallery Vittorio Emanuele ll is also known as ‘’Salone of Milano’’ and was originally built in 1865-1877 order to allow a covered passage between the most importants buildings of that time - the Duomo of Milan and La Scala.

Lake Como, Varenna and Bellagio. Can be reached easily by car or train leaving from the Milan within 1 hour. Como has a collection of most beautiful summer villas in Italy, together with beautiful villages such as Varenna and Bellagio, connected to each other by boats.
Santa Maria Della Grazie and The Last Super. Between 1495 and 1498, Leonardo da Vinci one of the most famous Italian painters create the masterpiece: the Last Supper. It’s an enormous painting, 4,6mt high and 8,8mt long, realized with tempera and oil on a chalk preparation.
