THE NEAPOLITAN RIGGIOLA
During the second half of the 16th century, Spanish Naples was a manufacturing and exporting center in the tile sector, the Neapolitan RIGGIOLE, from the ancient Catalan term "rajola". In this period in Campania the use of riggiole took on the role of expressive of great effect and, to this day, churches, stately buildings, gardens and terraces are the testimony of those centuries ('400 and '500) which marked the apogee of Neapolitan Majolica. In the 17th and 18th centuries the elements expanded decorative, enriched with elegant floral and phytomorphic motifs, landscapes and mythological scenes (of which the majolica cloister of S. Chiara is a splendid example). Bourbon Naples was the third largest city in Europe in terms of size and inhabitants after London and Paris but above all could have immense economic capital at its disposal. Thanks to the very wealthy clients, the floors are no longer a set of similar tiles that are repeated, but are designed as a single "grand design" in harmony with the surrounding architecture.
The typical colors of the Neapolitan school of the 18th century are only 7, among which we remember the "yellow Naples" and the "ultramarine blue", the remaining colors were obtained using different shades and densities or by mixing several colours. The measurements of riggiole in use in the 18th century were 22x22 or 21x21cm.
