Harvest in Monferrato

Apparently, if you want to create an entire region, all you need is a forbidden love, a mad dash on horseback and a little DIY horseshoeing!

Aleramo and Alasia’s epic escape led to the birth of Monferrato, where “mun” and “frà” mean brick and horseshoe. Moral of the story: always be prepared for a wild ride if you fall for the boss’s daughter!

To learn more about the history of the Monferrato wine region, read the article on my blog!

Hello wine lovers!
I'm Amanda Courtney, your guide through the picturesque vineyards and rolling hills of (not only) Langhe.

Originally from New Hampshire, my journey into the world of wine began after graduating from Art School in Portland Maine.

Seeking new adventures, I traded the cold winters of New England for the sunny beaches of Los Angeles, where I dove headfirst into the hospitality industry. It was here that my passion for wine truly blossomed and my journey as a sommelier took flight.

Now, I invite you to join me as we explore the enchanting Langhe region together. From my New England roots to the bustling city life of LA, each step has been a chapter in my love affair with wine, and I can't wait to share the stories, flavors, and hidden gems of the Langhe with you.

In the red corner, we have the classic Bolognese, hailing from the gastronomic heart of Emilia-Romagna. Known for its patiently simmered blend of meat, tomatoes, and aromatic herbs, Ragù alla Bolognese is the epitome of comfort and tradition.

In the blue corner, Piedmontese ragù enters the ring with the illustrious Salsiccia di Bra. This culinary contender, born in the charming town of Bra, brings a bold twist with its savory sausage essence, marrying the rich heritage of Piedmontese flavors.

It's a showdown of taste and tradition, where the silky pasta becomes the battleground. Which side of the peninsula will win over your taste buds?

The struggle is real as we attempt to synchronize smiles, eyes wide open, and no one blinking (spoiler: someone always blinks).

With roots reaching back centuries, these hardy succulents found their way to Sicily through trade routes, bringing with them a tale of adaptation and survival.

Thriving in the island's sun-drenched climate, the cactus became a steadfast companion to the Sicilian landscape, witnessing the rise and fall of civilizations.

Once introduced for practical purposes like creating natural barriers, the Sicilian cactus evolved into a symbol of endurance and strength.

Today, these spiky wonders dot the terrain, adding a touch of nature's artistry to the historic scenery.

If you want to discover more about Sicily, read the article on my blog: you will find some highlights of what to see, what to do, and what you shouldn't definitely miss.

I want to reveal the charming intersection of history where the Italian 'comare' and the balcony intertwine, creating a cultural narrative that spans generations.

Originally rooted in the Latin 'comitatus', reflecting companionship, the term 'comare' has evolved into a nuanced connection beyond kinship.

Balconies and front doors, with their quaint charm, have served as stages for shared moments between "comare" intimates - from laughter echoing through wrought-iron railings to whispered conversations bathed in the golden glow of the sun setting over ancient streets.

Unearthed from the pasta archives: Tajarin, the OG pasta influencer of the Renaissance.

Rumor has it, Michelangelo traded his chisel for a pasta cutter when he tasted this golden delight! Paired with Barbera, the two have been inseparable since the days of pasta-dinosaurs (don't fact-check that).

TRADITIONAL GIANDUIOTTO VS MODERN GIANDUIOTTO

Originating in Turin during the 19th century, the Gianduitto - an exquisite chocolate delight - is a piece of Piedmontese culture.

Crafted during times when cocoa was embargoed by Napoleon, Gianduiotto emerged as a delectable blend of hazelnuts and chocolate, revolutionizing the confectionery world by utilizing less cocoa.

Today, it stands as an iconic symbol of Turin's culinary legacy, a testament to the city's sweet tooth and innovation!

Step into the vineyard battlegrounds of the Barolo Wars, a clash of philosophies that rocked the heart of Italy's winemaking traditions.

In the 1980s, the hills of Barolo witnessed a fierce debate between Modernists and Traditionalists: two factions with divergent views on winemaking.

The Modernists, advocated for innovations such as smaller French oak barriques (2nd picture), shorter maceration periods, and a focus on single vineyard expressions. Their goal was to produce wines with more approachable fruit and softer tannins, challenging the time-honored practices of the region.

In contrast, the Traditionalists, staunchly defended the classic methods of extended maceration, aging in large Slavonian oak casks known as "botte grande" (1st picture) and an unwavering commitment to the region's indigenous grape, Nebbiolo. For them, the essence of Barolo lay in its ability to age gracefully, revealing layers of complexity over time.

Which side of the barrel are you on: embracing innovation or savoring tradition?
