St. Martin's Day, is a popular feast, although St. Martin is the patron of Castello, (one of the six “Sestieri” in Venice) and the parishioners celebrate his feast. Actually the event is bound back to the end of the harvest, but it presents strange aspects through the “calli” in Venice: little groups of children go around the city singing typical songs of the day playing cattle-bell and crushing soucepan lids (or other noisy objects) one against the other. The aim is to get some sweets or coins. It is a sort of “trick or treat”) in old venetian style.
