The Baroque facade of the Church of Saints Ildefonso and Tommaso di Villanova in the Via Sistina in Rome was built between 1724 and 1730 by Francesco Ferrari. The view from the Piazza della Trinità dei Monti is one of the best panoramas of Rome. The 18th century building with the picturesque rooftop loggia does not have a name, but was designed by the architect Francesco de Sanctis, who also colaaborated on the construction of the Spanish Steps themselves. Its ground floor on the Piazza di Spagna side is taken up by Babington's Tea House. The big dome in the photo belongs to the church of San Carlo al Corso.

The Ca****la Borghese in the Trinita de Monti Church in Rome, also known as Chapel of the Crucifixion, was constructed in 1570, when the church was enlarged. It was given to Marcantonio Borghese, then legal counsel of the convent. Many Borghese family members were buried here. In 1589 Cesare Nebbia executed the fresco cycle with the Stories of the Passion. In the early 19th century the Crucifixion was moved behind the choir and replaced by Daniele da Volterra's "Deposition". Around the middle of the century, when the Deposition was again moved to the second chapel, a plaster cast of the "Pieta" by German sculptor Wilhelm Theodor Achtermann (1799-81884) for Münster Cathedral was placed on the altar (the original was destroyed during World War II).

The 2nd chapel on the left in the Trinita de Monti church in Rome has since 1560 been named after the Spaniard Bonfil. The frescoes were painted by Paolo de Cespedes, also a Spaniard, with the help of Cesare Arbasia. Daniele da Volterra's "Deposition from the Cross" can also be seen in this chapel. Until 1809 this painting (then a fresco) decorated the adjacent Ca****la Orsini. After a restoration by Vincenzo Camuccini, it ended up in the Villa Medici nextdoor. Later it was resturned, and became the altarpiece of the Ca****la Bonfil.

In 1526, the Orsini Chapel in the Trinita de Monti Church in Rome became property of Archbishop Aldobrandino Orsini, who gave it to his daughter Elena. The present paintings date from the 19th century and are in the Nazarene style. (The socalled Nazarenes were a group of German painters, who were active in Rome in the early 19th century. Their aim was to create a spiritual kind of art.) Of the original paintings by Emma Orsini in 1545 and painted by Daniele Da Volterra, only the "Deposition" remains, albeit moved to the adjacent Ca****la Bonfil. The others were lost during the French occupation. The present altar piece "Immaculate Conception" was painted by Phillip Veit, in 1830.
