Charlotte Napoléone Bonaparte (1802 – 1839) was the daughter of Joseph Bonaparte, the older brother of Emperor Napoleon I, and Julie Clary. She was active as an artist.She studied engraving and lithography in Paris with the artist Louis Léopold Robert.

Using herself as her model, Lena Cronqvist, born 1938, builds psychologically intense scenes that seem to pinpoint the most universal experiences even when based on her own personal life. She explores family roles, such as being a child, sibling, parent, or life partner.Cronqvist belongs to a generation of artists who began highlighting the female narrative perspective in art in the late 1960s. This was a time when the feminist movement declared that the personal is political. In “The Madonna”, we see a mother with her infant in her arms, struggling to make ends meet.The title refers to Christian cult images where baby Jesus, the centre of the world, is depicted in the arms of his earthly mother.

Emma Gaggiotti Richards (1825 – 1912) was an Italian painter who was active not only in Italy but also in the United Kingdom. She completed five paintings for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

Agnes de Frumerie, Kleopatra,1898

Agnes de Frumerie (1869-1937) was a Swedish artist who spent much of her career in France. She was born in Skövde and studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm from 1886 to 1890. She lived in Paris from 1892 to 1923, where she studied with Rodin.

Plautilla Nelli was a self-taught nun-artist and the first ever known female Renaissance painter in Florence. She is one of only four women artists mentioned in Giorgio Vasari’s Lives of the Artists She was a nun of the Dominican convent of St. Catherine in Florence.

Back in Rome today with a French artist.

Élisabeth Vigée-Le Brun 1755-1842, Self portrait 1790 - Accademia Nazionale di San Luca

She was one of the great portrait artists of her day. At 15 she was painting the aristocracy, in her 20s she was the favoured painter of Marie-Antoinette, and by her 30s she was fleeing the French Revolution.

Sigrid Hjertén (1885 – 1948) was a Swedish modernist painter. Hjertén is considered a major figure in Swedish modernism. Periodically she was highly productive and participated in 106 exhibitions. She worked as an artist for 30 years before dying of complications from a lobotomy for schizophrenia.

Rosalba Carriera (1673-1757) - The Four Elements, Earth, Air, Water and Fire - Palazzo Corsini, Rome.

Rosalba Carriera was an Italian Rococo painter. In her younger years, she specialized in portrait miniatures. Carriera would later become known for her pastel portraits, helping popularize the medium in eighteenth-century Europe. She is remembered as one of the most successful women artists of any era.

Ginevra Cantofoli? - Donna con turbante/Beatrice Cenci? - around 1600 - Palazzo Barberini, Rome

This portrait, earlier attributed to Guido Reni is now thought to be by Ginevra Cantofoli, one of several forgotten women artists in Bologna during the Baroque period. It was also thought to be a portrait of the famous Beatrice Cenci, executed in September 1599, aged 22, along with her mother and her brother, for the murder of her father, Count Francesco Cenci, theory also dismissed today.
