Located on Lake Iseo in northern Italy, a small private
island Loreto is famous for its castle. A monastery,
built here the end of the 5th century.
However, people abandoned it in the 16th century.
Meanwhile, the island, after changing several owners,
belonged to Royal Navy captain Vincenzo Richeri who
built a castle in 1910 and a marina with two small

Abbazia di Sant’Antimo ❤️ The foundation of the abbey
By tradition the lounding of the imperial Abbey of Sant'Antimo is attributed
to Charles the Great, even though the
firet documentation dates back to a
deed of the Emperor Ludovico il Pio in
the year 814. During the ninth century,
thanks to imperial donations and the
purchase of the relics of Saint Antimo,
the abbey consolidated its prestige
and in the eleventh century, due to its
position closing to the Via Francigena,
it was included. in the system of the
great European pilgrimage itineraries,
The activity of offering refuge and assis-
tance to the pilgrims increased the num-
ber of donations offered to the abbey
which became one of the most powerful
monastic foundation in all of Tuscany.
The new church building
From 1118, thanks to remarkable do-
nation to the abbey by Count Bernardo
degli Ardengheschi, the new abbey
church was erected to replace the old
one, the so-called Carolingia Chapel.
The leatures of the new building bear
a marked resembiance to the French
style mediated by the local tradition, influenced by the Lombardy artistic culture. The belsilica type
layout, with its Ihroe naves, atnbulato-
ry and radial chapels,
the central nave, and the exceptional
quality relief decorations, as the capliat with Daniel in the lion's den attributed to the Maestro di Cabestany. The
alternating columns and crucilorm pil-
lars, as well as some of the decorative
elements, like the capitals of the am-
bulatory and the bell tower, draw on
Lombardy artistic culture.
The Monastic Pharmacy and the
St. Hildegard Garden
The Monastic Pharmacy is located in
the coister and in the ground in front
of the façade there is the St. Hildegard
Garden with some of the main medicinal plants of the Benedicline tradition.
