Famous for his contributions to physics and The Theory of Relativity, Albert Einstein was also a passionate yachtsman. Despite being considered a poor boat handler, sailing played a significant role in his life. He believed it offered a way to escape and relax, although he often brought a notebook to jot down ideas.

In 1929, friends gifted him a sailboat named Tümmler (“Porpoise”) for his 50th birthday. It was a 7-metre long, 2.35-metre wide shalup with a Bermuda sail, a movable keel, and a 5-hp auxiliary engine. The sail layout, innovative for its time, comprised a 16.05 m2 mainsail, a 3.95 m2 staysail and an 8.25 m2 jib. The hold consisted of a cabin with two berths. Einstein loved the boat, praising its stability and comfort while referring to it as “the little fat boat.” He preferred simplicity in sailing and disliked engines, even refusing an outboard motor.

After moving to the U.S. in the 1940s, he acquired a 5-meter boat called Tinef (in Yiddish, “something worthless”), known for his humorous sailing mishaps. He kept the Tinef until his death in 1955, reflecting his enduring love for the sea.

As Einstein observed: “Nature conceals her secrets because she is sublime, not because she is a trickster.” So we think there’s not always enough time to explore the sea, but it’s better to start than never try.
