📍Tour Eiffel, Paris

The Eiffel Tower is not only the symbol of Paris: the most visited monument in the world has many features that make it special! 😉Here are some fun facts:
1 - Until 1930 it was the tallest monument in the world, later surpassed by the Chrysler Building in New York.
2 - It was originally supposed to be built in Barcelona. With its top reaching towards the sky, it would have competed with Gaudi's Sagrada Familia.
3 - It should have been dismantled right after the Universal Exposition, for which it had been built, but things turned out differently. It was spared because it could serve as an excellent antenna for transmitting radio signals.
4 - At its inauguration, the Eiffel Tower was not exempt from the criticisms of citizens and artists, who even came to define it "the iron asparagus", a nickname still in vogue among many Parisians.
5 - The lighting of the Eiffel Tower involves around 20,000 light bulbs, creating magic light shows that are unique in the world.
6 - It has changed colour several times. Initially it was brick red, while in 1899 it was painted in five different colours, from orange to yellow. It has been bronze, the current colour, since 1968. It is repainted every seven years to avoid deterioration and rusting. For an area of 250,000 square meters, 60 tons of paint are used!

📍Aran Islands, Ireland

Located 48 km off the Galway Bay in western Ireland, the three islands offer spectacular landscapes and views over the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish coast. ☘

The islands, respectively called Inis Mór, Inis Meáin and Inis Oírr, are home to a total of 1,200 Irish-speaking people.

Having inspired countless writers, poets and artists over the centuries, many come to the Aran Islands on a retreat to connect with the most authentic and rural Ireland. Other than wonderful beaches and typical dry-stone walls that run through the fields, you will find ancient forts, which make up some of the oldest archaeological remains in Ireland, and countless wild animals such as seals and rare birds. 🐦

If you want to spend time away from the city and recharge, the Aran Islands are a great place to start. We recommend renting a bike and exploring the islands in all their beauty, or resting on a hill and gaze at the Ocean.

⛴ To reach the islands you can either catch a ferry from the Irish coast or, if you want a more unique experience, hop on a small plane from Connemara airport which will bring you to either of the three islands, allowing you to admire the landscape from above as you get there.

📍Florence, Italy

Can you feel an air of Renaissance? Of course, we are in Florence! 🥰

One of our wevelers went there recently and sent us these shots!
The city, located about 145 miles northwest of Rome, is surrounded by the beautiful Tuscan hills, home of villas and farms, vineyards, and orchards.

Florence was founded as a Roman military colony in the 1st century, and during its long history it has been a republic, the seat of the Duchy of Tuscany, and even the capital city of Italy (1865-1870).

During the 14th–16th centuries, Florence achieved preeminence in commerce and finance, education and, especially, the arts. Among the most famous of the city’s cultural giants are Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Dante Alighieri, Machiavelli, Galileo, and its most-renowned rulers, generations of the Medici family. 🧑‍🎓

The present glory of Florence is mainly its past. Indeed, its historic centre was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1982. Almost every building there is a work of art, and the splendours of the city are stamped with the personalities of the individuals who created them. The geniuses of Florence were backed by people of towering wealth, and the city to this day gives testimony to their passions for religion, art, politics and science.🎨

📍Walkie-Talkie skyscraper, London

You might recognise the skyscraper on the right from one of our last stories: it’s London’s 20 Fenchurch Street, affectionately known as The Walkie-Talkie! 🗣

Here’s a fun fact about it: before it was even completed in 2014, Londoners realised that when the sun would shine directly onto its side, the Walkie-Talkie would act as a magnifying lens on the street below, focussing the light into a tiny area on the ground, which would reach temperatures of up to 117 °C! Some cars were damaged and people even managed to fry eggs under such a heat. 🍳
Safety measures have quickly been taken and it’s now completely safe to walk beneath it.

But do you know what’s on the top three floors of the building? The famous Sky Garden, a botanical garden with bars and restaurants from where you can enjoy stunning views of London. It’s free to access during the day and until the early evening, after which only restaurant guests can enjoy their meals while admiring the city’s iconic skyline. 🏙

🚈 To reach 20 Fenchurch Street, just take one of the many tube lines to Bank, Liverpool Street or Aldgate and have a short walk through The City financial district.

📍Vesuvio, Italy

let's talk about this interesting volcano at which the splendid Naples extends! 🥳

Some curiosities:
1. Vesuvius currently remains the only active volcano on the European continent, if we exclude Etna which is located on an island: Sicily.

2. Indeed, Vesuvius is technically more than a peak. It is made up of another mountain, Somma. The fact that the two mountains are so close is probably the reason why they both group together under the name Vesuvius.

3. Although the volcano is active, it has erupted intensely only about 8 times in the past 17,000 years.

4. Vesuvius has not seriously erupted since 1944. However, before then, it was thought that it could activate once every 20 years.

To see it, just eat a good pizza in Naples! 😋

📍Arc de Triomphe, Paris

Let's talk french! 🇫🇷

The Arc is one of the most famous monuments in Paris, located at the western end of the Champs-Élysées at the centre of Place Charles de Gaulle.
In 1806, Napoleon ordered the construction of the Arc de Triomphe in honor of the Grand Army. Inspired by the arches of antiquity, the monument bears the illustrious names of the nation and houses the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, whose flame is renewed every evening. From the terrace you can have a unique view of the Champs-Élysées. 😍

The arch was designed by Jean Chalgrin and built by architects Louis Robert Goust and Jean Nicolas Huyot, as a neoclassical version of the ancient triumphal arches of the Roman Empire.
The monument, 50 meters high and 45 meters wide, is the second-biggest triumphal arch in the world, after the one built in North Korea in 1982.

📍Hofbräuhaus, Munich

Coming back to Munich! Our wevelers Alex sent us this video from before the pandemic.

The Hofbräuhaus am Platzl is a beer hall in Munich, Germany.
It was founded in 1589 after William V, Duke of Bavaria, decided to import beer from Saxony, as he found the local one to taste too bad. ✌

On the ground floor is the Schwemme, the most popular hall as well as the vital centre of the Hofbräuhaus: frescoed vaults, long solid wood tables, orchestras and waiters in perfect Bavarian style ...and of course the beer, rivers of lager! The atmosphere is always very cheerful and lively. On the first floor are the quietest and most elegant rooms, while on the second floor the large party hall offers music and dance shows in the evening. You can also eat and drink outside in the beer garden.
Regular customers have the honour of having their own private ceramic mug, kept in good view on the ground floor. 😝

Attention! Tipping is not mandatory in Bavaria but it is customary to tip if you are satisfied with the service. That's roughly 8% -10% of the bill.

👣 You can reach the Hofbräuhaus very easily by walking in the city centre: you won't miss it!

📍G*e Aulenti square, Milan

From England we come back to Italy where one of our wevelers recently went ✌

We are in Milan, in the perfect meeting point between the historic center and the financial area.

G*e Aulenti square, and the surrounding buildings are the result of the rehabilitation project of the districts of Garibaldi, Isola and Varesine. The square is surrounded by various truly amazing buildings. The most impressive is the Unicredit Tower complex, the one you see in the pics, with the tallest skyscraper in Italy (231 meters high) 🏙

Nearby there is one of the buildings that most attract the attention of visitors: the Vertical Forest, an architectural complex consisting of two towers covered with 2,000 plant species (to which we will dedicate a post!)
The urban complex is the work of the architect Cesar Pelli.

📍Pulteney Bridge, Bath

and now let's fly away! Where? England! 🇬🇧

Pulteney Bridge is a bridge over the River Avon in Bath, England.
Was designed by Robert Adam, in a Palladian style, it is highly unusual in that it has shops built across its full span on both sides!
The bridge is named after Frances Pulteney, wife of William Johnstone. ✌

It was completed by 1774, and connected the city with the land of the Pulteney family which it wished to develop. Designed by Robert Adam It has been designated as a Grade I listed building.
It is one of only four bridges in the world to have shops across its full span on both sides (the others being in Florence, Venice, and Erfurt, Germany).

📍Munich, Germany

Did you answer the story correctly? So here's a nice post about Munich! 🤩

With a population of 1.5 million people, Munich is the most important city in southern Germany and one of the most beloved German cities. And for good reason! It is a pivotal place for tourists and business people alike, and its royal residences and immense parks, along with its museums and Baroque churches, make it an extremely liveable and interesting city to visit. ✌

Anywhere you go, you’ll be surrounded by the famous Bavarian folklore, with its traditional music and costumes.
Of course, another thing for which Munich is famous all over the world is its beer and its most famous event, the Oktoberfest, which attracts over 6 million people every year. 🍻

These pics were taken from the top of Sankt Peter’s bell tower, right behind Marienplatz: you can climb up there for just a few Euros and enjoy a great 360 degree view of the city.

🚃Reaching Marienplatz from Munich Airport takes less than 40 minutes by train or by one of the two suburban metro lines S1 and S8

📍Korenmarkt, Ghent

After leaving Berlin, here we go to Belgium! ❤

This pic was taken in Korenmarkt, a square in the historic centre of Ghent, Belgium.
Located between the Leie river and St. Nicholas' Church, it’s one of the city's most important and famous tourist locations: Korenmarkt is surrounded with beautiful historic buildings, outdoor and indoor markets, cafes and restaurants. 🥳

It’s also one of the main locations of the annual Gentse Feesten cultural festival.

👣To reach Korenmarkt from Ghent’s train station, we recommend having a nice walk along the river leading to the city centre.

📍Berliner Fernsehturm

Are you tuned in? 🤩
Why? But it's simple! Because this is the television tower in central Berlin, precisely a few steps from Alexander Platz.

Was constructed between 1965 and 1969 by the government of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). It remains a landmark today, visible throughout the central and some suburban districts of Berlin.

📍Alexanderplatz, Berlin

Ready for a new journey? ✌

Our wevelers takes us to Berlin, where he spent a few days visiting the German city. What you see in the photo is the Alexader Platz station, terminal of the homonymous square and even more symbolic is the tower by now the undisputed symbol of the Berlin skyline and the epicenter of the now fallen East Berlin.

But stay tuned for the tower (in the true sense, then you will understand why) because we will make another dedicated post. 👀

Alexander Platz was originally a cattle market, thus called Ochsenplatz (oxen square). Its definitive name is due to the Russian Tsar Alexander I, who visited it in 1805. The square developed later, especially after the construction of the station to become a fervent commercial area. Bombed in 1945, it was then arranged and enlarged in various phases, and here was built in 1969 the huge television tower visible from all parts of the Berlin city.

So auf wiedersehen! 🇩🇪

📍La mostarda, Mantua, Italy
🍴 typical food
Hi! How is the end of summer going? So as not to think too much about it, today we present a true Italian delicacy: mustard!
🏛Originally from northern Italy and Tuscany, mostarda does not have a single recipe but changes according to the production area.
🍑In general it is based on fruit, sugar and mustard essence.
Originally, it was invented to be able to preserve fruit for a long time!
🧀It is often combined with other foods, such as cheeses and mascarpone (a real calorie bomb!)

📍The room of the spouses, Mantua, Italy
📰 culture
Hello everybody! Today we are talking about a gem of the castle of Mantua, namely the fresco created by Andrea Mantegna in the bride and groom's room between 1465 and 1474.
The room is completely decorated with works that illusory break through the walls as if you were in the center of a loggia. On the ceiling there is an oculus from which human figures and a peacock (which recalls the exotic animals present at the court) appear, silhouetted against a blue sky and surrounded by painted sails and plumes. To reinforce the realism of the fresco, Mantegna also painted dangerously poised cherubs.
In general, the goal of the work is to celebrate the Gonzagas, the noble family of Mantua.

Fabio, where are you now? 🤔

Our wevelers Fabio started a week ago his 830km journey (strictly on foot only) along the Apennine ridge, the first stage included the route of the "via degli Dei" which starts from Bologna and arrives in Florence.

We met him at the beginning of his journey, but where is he now?

He finally arrived in Piazza della Signoria in Florence, where the incredible route ends! 🤩

The first part of his journey lasted 130km touching the regions of Emilia -Romagna and Tuscany in a path that according to him was more of a trekking. These are the impressions of his first experience:

"it's a path that looks more like a severe trek than a path. There is a lot of difference in height and uneven ground, suitable for lovers of the genre. I prefer the dirt roads that cross the medieval villages, variety of landscapes and different foods to taste. Here there are beautiful views, many (too many for me) woods, few opportunities to visit the villages and a lot of sports".

In short, a very challenging route, waiting to hear his impressions on the first kilometers of the second route, the "via di Francesco" which is about to begin.

Let's continue to follow him! Good luck Fabio!

Stay tuned 😉

Ready for a 830km walking trip? 😳

Fabio, one of our weveler from Turin, left his house a few days ago with destination Bologna.
From here he starts his 830 km walking tour on the Apennine ridge to Rome 💪

The first stretch from Piazza Maggiore in Bologna to Piazza della Signoria in Florence is called "Via degli Dei".
The 130-kilometer route runs through woods and wonderful views of two italian regions: Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany.
Fabio, however, will continue further to get to Rome crossing the "Via di Francesco".

📍Follow his adventure on our social channels, we will publish constant updates!

📍St. Mark's Basilica, Venice, Italy
Hello everyone! As promised, here is the first post dedicated to St. Mark's square, more precisely to the basilica!
🏛First of all a bit of history: the current basilica dates back to 1231 and was the last of a series of churches which, due to fires but not only, replaced one another since the 8th century. The architectural form of this complex recalls the one of the Holy Apostles of Constantinople. Legend has it that in the 8th century two Venetians stole the remains of San Marco and brought them to this basilica. However, we advise you to consult the official website of the basilica to read all the history and events related to this building.
🎨Also from an artistic point of view this complex is spectacular, among the golden mosaics of the facades and the elements brought during the fourth crusade from Constantinople, its wealth has no boundaries.
📜In addition, there are a lot of legends around it, even related to individual statues, let us know in the comments if you want to know more!
👣🛥You can get to the basilica either on foot, or by vaporetto number 1, 6, 2 and 5.1.
⏰It is open to visits from 9.30 to 17.15 and the basic ticket is € 3

📍 Fondaco dei Tedeschi, Venice, Italy
Hello! Have you ever been to the Fondaco dei Tedeschi in Venice?
It’s a beautiful palace, where you can buy luxury products, enjoy an aperitif like gentlemen but also ... be breathless (for free, just book in time) in front of the view of Venice from the terrace of the building! The perfect time to do that , in our opinion, is sunset.
Let's find out a little about the history of this building overlooking the Grand Canal, a stone's throw from the Rialto bridge!
Let's start with the name: the palace is so called because, at the time of its foundation (around the 13th century) it was the landing place of German merchants.
Furthermore, the word Fondaco (in Venetian Fontego) derives from the Arabic word “Funduk” which means house / warehouse.
The palace was the subject of a terrible fire in 1505, but in just three years it was rebuilt. A lot of importance was given to the frescoes. The task of completing them was entrusted to no less than the masters Giorgione and Tiziano, a pupil of the former at the time!
In 1797, with the fall of the Republic, this was suppressed.
This was one of the most important Fondaci in the golden age of Venice, together with the one of the Turks. If you have time, we recommend that you also visit it, which today houses the Natural History Museum.
In 2016 it was inaugurated as a shopping center complete with a cultural center inside! Today it is part of the DFS group.

📍 Borgo Grazzano Visconti, Emilia Romagna, Italy
Hello! Today we take you with us to Emilia Romagna in the Grazzano Visconti village, where it seems to be in the Middle Age.
🏛Do you want to know a curiosity about this place? It's fake! In fact, the Visconti family had all the crenellated turrets and palaces built during the twentieth century. At that time it was "fashionable" to bring to light architectural elements of the past!
🏰In addition, in the center, there is also a castle, surrounded by a beautiful park where you can meet many animals!
📜There is also a legend linked to the castle: it is said that Aloisa, the lady who lived there, died from the pain caused by her husband's betrayals and that her ghost still wanders within the walls of the building, causing spite to those who visit without leaving her a present!

📍Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain

A little weird huh? Doesn't it look like some kind of giant helmet? 🤔

But this strange building is the Auditorium in the capital of the Canary Islands, Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

One of our wevelers was there some time ago and gave us these shots of his adventure. 🌍

Symbol of expressionist architecture, this structure was designed by the spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, who presented the final project in 1991. Construction began in 1997 and was inaugurated on September 26, 2003 in the presence of Felipe di Borbone and some of the most prestigious newspapers of the world.

The Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife (Symphony Orchestra of Tenerife) is located in this auditorium, which is very different from traditional projects due to its shape which aims to surround the listener with the sound sources generated on the stage. 🎶

The main hall or Symphony, is crowned by a dome: it has 1616 seats arranged in an amphitheater and a stage with an opening of 16.5 meters and a depth of 14 meters.

It'is very impressive from the outside and represents one of the most interesting attractions in Santa Cruz.

So why not visit it?

Sass Brusai, Veneto, Italy Hello everyone!
Today we take you with us on the via ferrata made by our wevelers Ester on Sunday! And do you like to go to the mountains? Let us know in the comments!
You can park your car and start a walk for about half an hour, then taking the detour to Sass Brusai and proceeding along a more uphill path in the woods. Then let's fly together to the Canaries! 🐤

One of our wevelers traveled there a few years ago and gave us this pic of the "Basílica y Real Santuario Mariano de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria", in the canary municipality of the same name 🕍

It's the most visited sanctuary in the Canary Islands and one of the most visited in Spain. The building is the work of the architect José Enrique Marrero Regalado and the name is in honor of Madonna of Candelaria, patron saint of the Canaries.
