JEWISH TRADITION: YOM KIPPUR
THE MOST IMPORTANT DAY OF THE YEAR begins at 5785 at sunset on Friday, October 11th -- always ten days after Rosh Hashana, the day is supposed to be sublime, far from everyday, a day of retrospection and introspection. Tradition commands adults, healthy fasting.
It's already a New Year, but the Book of Life is still open. Yom Kippur or the Fruitful Day. is a solemn and solemn day, but also a happy day, because its FOCUS is repentance for wrongs done, the request for forgiveness, and the privilege of forgiving others -- so the Talmud teaches.
The last 10 days are for asking for forgiveness and forgiving, to reach out, write, call, visit, pay debts, and even return forgotten borrowed books.
YOU CAN ONLY FORGIVE YOURSELF, NEVER OTHERS. God also, in a human way, forgives only for himself.
SHOULD WE ALWAYS FORGIVE THE ONE WHO IS ASKING FOR IT? Majmonides claims that it's cruel not to forgive after asking three times. But in situations where the wrong done cannot be repaired, forgiveness is the decision of the hurted.
ARE THE UNFORGIVABLE SINS? Yes. Murder is the most drastic example: it is unforgivable, only the injured person can forgive.
WISHES: Between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur the wish is G'MAR HATIMA TOVA.
LITURGY: The traditional and most important is KOL NIDRE -- not a prayer, but a supplication. It comes from the tragic times when the Jews were forced to baptize -- and on Yom Kippur, this is how they "erased" the baptism.
For millennium, people prayed for rain, for fertility, for healing... Now on Yom Kippur, from all corners of the earth, people will be asking for the return of the hostages, for the return of the soldiers safe and intact, for an end to hatred, war, and famine, for strength and reason to live well, strong, and fair and most of all for peace and tranquility. The power and spirit of the nation in this song.
