The Gianicolo, or Janiculum, takes its name from the god Janus, the god of all beginnings; this Hill was the site of an important battle of the Italian Risorgimento, Giuseppe Garibaldi and his army defended the Roman Republic preventing the reinstate of the papal authority over the city of Rome, that is why you’ll find a commemoration monument devoted to Garibaldi.

The Vatican Museums display works from the immense collection amassed by the Catholic Church. Previously closed The New Wing, Braccio Nuovo, is open again. It was built by Raffaele Stern and houses some amazing statues including the Augustus of Prima Porta, the Doryphoros and The River Nile.

💙 The Vatican is open to visitors 💙

Saint Peter’s Basilica is regarded as one of the holiest Catholic shrines.

Catholic tradition holds that the basilica is the burial site of Saint Peter, one of Jesus's apostles and also the first Bishop of Rome (Pope). Saint Peter's tomb is supposedly directly below the high altar of the basilica. For this reason, many popes have been interred at St. Peter's since the Early Christian period.

A church has stood on this site since the time of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great. Old St. Peter's Basilica dates from the 4th century AD.
Construction of the present basilica began on 18 April 1506 and was completed on 18 November 1626.

The Basilica is open: 7 am. to 7 pm.
