Today, January 17th, of 1377 AD, Pope Gregory XI returns the Papal seat to Rome from Avignone, France (absent since 1309 AD). Although French of birth, Pope Gregory XI was a firm believer that the papal seat should be in Rome; this belief was influenced by Saint Catherine of Siena (1347-1380), who was contemporary of the pope, and whose tomb is now in Rome.

Today, in 550 AD, Totila, King of the Ostrogoths, conquered Rome for a second time.
But, just like the first time (dec 17th, 546 AD) , King Totila made his way in Rome, by corrupting someone on the inside to open the gates. In this case, Rome was underpaying its soldiers (the Isaurian Guards), and they are the ones who turned their back o Rome: a small part of Totila's army was placed on one side of the city's walls, and loudly started playing their war horns. While most of the Roman soldiers(from the Bizantine army) moved in the direction of the sound, a small number of them went to the Southern gate, called San Paolo, opened it, and allowed the Ostrogoths in.
Very few survived the attack, and the ones that did, did so by finding shelter, and Hadrian's mausoleum is where most of the Romans hid.
This is one of many battles, that for what is now called: the Gothic Wars.

21,13 meters (72.58 feet).
Created in 1963/65 by Bruno Innocenti, with a mix of concrete and marble chips.
Located atop of mount San Biagio, where a meadivial castle once stood, and where a bloody battle took place against the French troops. In 1907 a large metal cross was placed st Mount San Biagio's tallest peak.
The cross, however, was constantly being struck by lightning, melting.. much was done to keep the cross, but eventually the decision was made to replace it.

Chiesa del Gesu, or Vasa Professa.
Beautiful, and highly detailed church, located in the heart of Palermo (Sicily, Italy)

Built in the second half of the 1500's, but it was enlarged, and more elaborate decorations were added in the 1600's, once Baroque had made it's way to Palermo. It is now one of Italy's (and not only) most beautiful churches.

The Holy Stairs, Rome.
There are 28 white marble steps, brought back to Rome, from St. Helena, Emperor Constantine's mother, in the IV century aD.
According to tradition, as Jesus walked up these steps to reach Pontius Pilatus, blood dripped from his face, and fell on the 2nd, 11th, and 28th step.
Steps were so consumed by pligrams walking up them, that they were cover with wood to preserve them. Now, one can only go up them on ones knees.

Ragusa, Italy.
It dates back to XX BC (!!!), and it has always played an important role in the development of Sicily.
On January 11, 1693, a violent earthquake destroyed the old city, causing almost 5000 deaths. The entire city had to be rebuilt. The upper part of the city was reconstructed with the popular architecture of the time: baroque; while the lower part of the town was rebuilt respecting the roads of the medieval hamlet.
Now days, it is known as: "La città dei Ponti" (city of bridges) because of three important (historically, and artistically) bridges.
It's and italian jem.

Trajan's column.
Beginning of II century AD, located in Rome, on the North West Side of the imperial Forum.
It tells the story of the military campaign against some of Rome's toughest enemies of the time: the Dacians.
In ancient times, it was painted, and the soldiers held real, 3D, bronze weapons (stolen in the middle ages).

The Roman Emperor Hadrian (II century AD) was the first roman Emperor to wear a beard. Traditionally, the Romans had been "clean cut" for centuries, and the beard was associated with "barbarians". Hadrian was highly educated, and loved the Greek culture, travelling many time to Greece during his reign. There, having a beard was a symbol of wisdom (Aristotele, and Plato both had one), so he decided to let his grow.... HOWEVER, Rumour had it that Hadrian, who was quite handsome, well "built", and liked himself quite a bit, grew his beard to cover his facial blemishes.
Whatever the case, he started a trend, that was followed by many rulers after him.
