The Abbey of San Fruttuoso is a beautiful Benedettine monastery dating back to year 1000, overlooking Portofino's sea in Liguria 🐟
Only 5 km from Portofino and 40 km from Genova, this little corner of paradise can be reached only by ferry ⛴ from Camogli or Rapallo, or on foot🚶🏻so it can be easily included in a tour of Genova and Cinque Terre.
The Abbey is open almost every day all year round, and can be discovered both with a guided tour or a visit on your own! ✨

May is said to be the month of mothers and roses ✨🌹✨

To celebrate this month, take a trip to one of the many rose gardens in Italy, such as the one in the Park of the Villa Reale in Monza (as little as 30 min from the center of Milan) or in the Municipal Garden in Rome.

Relaxing time, the scent of flowers, colors and sharing a day together will make for unforgettable moments!

Happy 🍝

Celebrated today, April 6th, Carbonara Day celebrates one of the most iconic Italian dishes!

💡 The celebration dates back to 2017, thanks to an idea of Unione Italiana Foods' pasta makers and is now a worldwide social event

😱 But did you know that one of the most accredited origins of this pasta dish is that it was born in Rome, but thanks to the Americans? The recipe appears in cookbooks only after 1944, year when the allies arrived in Italy.
Due to shortage of food and resources, many restaurants still cooked using "K-rations" of American soldiers which included dehydrated bacon and eggs.

✨ A great plate of traditional carbonara is made of very few ingredients: dry pasta (possibly spaghetti or mezze maniche), Pecorino Romano, eggs (some say yolk only), guanciale and black pepper!

How do you like your carbonara?

Carnival is a Western Christian festive season that occurs before Lent. It typically involves public celebrations, including events such as parades, public street parties and other entertainments. 🎉

This year, Carnival occurs from the 16th until the 21st of February, with an exception of the popular Carnevale di Venezia being celebrated between the 4th until the 21st of the month. 🎭

This season is known for being a time of great indulgence before Lent leading to Easter. For example, chiacchiere, frittelle and other traditional desserts are prepared and sold in big quantities for both children and adults! 🍭🍬🍫

One of my favorite ways to travel is the train! 🚂

The Bernina Express is a narrow gauge red train with panoramic sightseeing cars run by the Swiss railway company between Tirano - in Northern Italy 🇮🇹 - and Chur - in Switzerland 🇨🇭

The whole journey takes approximately 4 hours, reaching 2.253 meters above sea level and crossing the Swiss Alps, but you can hop off and on to visit several towns along the way. UNESCO World Heritage since 2008, it first opened to the public 100 years earlier! ✨

If you’re looking for winter wonderland, Italy won’t disappoint! ❄️ However, when traveling to this magical country during colder months, you need to be prepared for the unpredictable weather: with this in mind, pack accordingly! ☀️🌧
If you're traveling through Europe, and not just Italy, you might as well keep in mind that most low cost airlines ✈️ have strict rules for overweight luggages...so better travel light! 🧳 🦋

Here's a list of travel tips/essentials to help you pack:
1. Lots of layers and a thick waterproof and windbreaking coat ☔️ This way you'll be able to easily adjust to the weather that - keep in mind - will be very different if traveling the north or the south of Italy! Pro tip: don't pack the jacket but wear it while you travel so it'll take less room in your luggage.
2. Waterproof shoes/boots 👢 When touring Italy, you should know you're in for a great deal of walking, so make sure your shoes are comfortable, warm and transition well day to night (quality over quantity!).
3. Thermal underwear, including socks, and winter accessories such as hats, scarves and gloves 🧣🧤
4. Day bag, or even better, a f***y pack. Wear it across your body to have all essentials at hand (and safe against pickpocketers!) throughout the day. You can carry a foldable cotton tote in it in case you decide to do some shopping.
5. Consider embarking a backpack instead of a traditional luggage. Italy is full of stairs and ups and downs, and a backpack could be a much more practical alternative! 🎒

What else would you include in your essential winter-travel list?

Happy ✨🍕 If there's an element that - above all - unites the world with Italy it's definitely PIZZA! 🍕✨

But did you know that:

1. The first North Korean pizzeria opened only in 2009 🤯
2. The United States eats 350 slices of pizza every second (according to the National Association of Pizza operators)! 🤤🤤🤤
3. A Pizza was Delivered in Space, but not to an Italian astronaut: in 2001 Russian cosmonaut Yuri Usachov had the honor of being the first person to receive a pizza delivery while in orbit 🚀
4. Hawaiian pizza was invented in Canada 🍖🍍
5. In India, the most preferred pizza topping is tofu followed by minced mutton and grated ginger 🇮🇳

And you? Where would you travel to looking for the perfect slice of Pizza? 😌 Let us know in the comments!

"L'Epifania tutte le feste si porta via!" 🧹

Today, January 6th also know as Epifania, officially marks the end of Christmas festivities for Italians (and the day Christmas decorations are usually taken down)...but we don't think that's a good reason not to start planning your next vacation! 👩🏻‍💻

24th or 25th? ✨

Did you know the main difference between Christmas celebration 🎄North and South is the date? And yes, because if from Florence upwards (km more, km less) the Christmas celebrations are concentrated during lunch on the 25th, from Rome downwards, the party starts with dinner on Christmas Eve, on the 24th.

If you celebrate Christmas, when do you celebrate? 🍾

Team Pandoro or Team Panettone?⚡️

If you ask Italians this question you will quickly realize there are two friendly but distinct factions: those who love raisins and candied fruit 🍊🍋 and those who prefer the simplicity of a soft dough covered in powdered sugar 🧁

However, from north to south of the country, everyone agrees that Pandoro and Panettone are the typical sweets of Italian Christmas! 🎄But where do these desserts come from?

The history of Pandoro starts from the city of Verona, birthplace to the pastry chef Domenico Melegatti whom, in 1884, was the first to patent this eight-pointed star ⭐️ Christmas cake in Italy. The inspiration for this Christmas delight, which would soon become a real Italian institution, came from a traditional Veronese dessert, the Levà, prepared on Christmas Eve.

The history of Panettone mixes tradition and legend, but there is little doubt that its diffusion started from Milan. The origin of Panettone is also linked to the medieval tradition of celebrating Christmas with the family by placing three bread loaves 🥖🥖🥖 on the table to be shared and to keep a slice, a sign of continuity, until the following year.
The recipe we know today, however, was perfected only towards the end of the 1800s, when the Milanese pastry chef Giovanni Felice Luraschi decided to add yeast to obtain a higher and softer dessert, to be rigorously enriched with cubes of candied fruit or raisins.

Did you know that Italy has a "female Santa"? 🤶🏼❄️

The night between the 12th and the 13th of December is known as the night of Santa Lucia. The tradition tells the story of Saint Lucia - Christian martyr, bearer of light ✨ and protector of sight 👀 - bringing presents to the children on her donkey.

In addition to Sweden 🇸🇪 and Norway 🇮🇸, where Saint Lucia's day marks the beginning of the Christmas period, December 13th is also celebrated in many Italian northern cities such as Bergamo, Brescia, Verona and Venezia, as well as in Syracuse, Sicily.

In Syracuse, her hometown, the patron saint is celebrated with an imposing procession. A trip in this time of year reserves the emotion of witnessing ancient popular rites, still deeply felt nowadays by locals.

The 8th of December, Italy observes a Christian holiday - the Immaculate Conception - and most schools and offices stay close for celebration 🥳 Not many know though, that the 7th is also Sant'Ambrogio, patron saint of Milan!

The most traditional and popular event of the week is the "Oh Bej! Oh Bej!" craft fair, which for five centuries anticipates the Christmas festivities of the Milanese with sweets and curiosities of all kinds 🍷🍬🎠 The fair lasts an average of four days and is a must for every Milanese and tourist in search of the perfect gift or, simply, the festive atmosphere! 🎄✨⛄️

Italy isn't just a summer destination! ⛄️❄️⛄️

As December finally arrived, let me share with you a few ideas that would make your winter vacation in Italy unique:

⛷🏂 Mountain resorts - Both Northern and Central regions of Italy offer some incredible skiing and winter spa 🧖🏻‍♀️ destinations, some of which are reachable from main cities in a couple hours train-ride!

🎄🍷 Christmas Markets - Every weekend of December should be spent taking in the festive atmosphere, wondering at Christmas lights, drinking mulled wine and shopping presents for your loved ones!

🧀🍲 Food - Last but not least, winter food deserves an ode of its own. Savory, fatty, cheesey, garlicky polenta, tortellini in meat broth, Pizzoccheri and hot chocolate with whipped cream are only a few of the dishes you're missing out on!

When you travel to Europe from abroad, you always want to make it worth your while! 🗺

For this trip I planned last October, I spoke to Anthony and Randy - my clients - and listened closely to what they desired from this vacation. It's always exciting to make dreams come true! ✨ Together we decided to include all the most beautiful Italian art cities in the tour: Milan, Venice, Florence, Naples and Rome.

I took care of booking flights ✈️ insurance 🛟 accommodation 🏨 transportation 🚗 and tours 📸 and all my clients had to do was enjoy their vacation! We were in touch while they traveled so I could make sure that each and every one of their needs was met. It's not always easy to travel to a Country you're not familiar with or where you don't speak the language, but with a little help from a "local" things can go much smoother 😊

Are you thinking about your next vacation? 🤩 Get in touch, I'll be happy to help! 🙋🏻‍♀️
