The Vendicari nature reserve (20 minutes) is a gem for all nature lovers and offers spectacular long sandy beaches. Siracusa is only a 30 minute drive away and a visit to its ancient quarter ‘Ortigia’ and Greek ruins is a must. Also nearby are Cava Grande, Cava del Carosello and Pantalica, spectacular gorge and the deepest canyon in Europe: a series of rock pools, waterfalls and ancient cave-homes. The areas of Pachino ( famous for cherry tomatoes) and Portopalo are very interesting places to visit. It is here that you will find the southernmost point of Sicily the little ‘Isolotto delle correnti’, with a lighthouse and where sea turtles and pelicans can still be frequently spotted on the shore.
