“The fountains are enough to justify a trip to Rome”, said the romantic English poet P.B. Shelley.
He was right because no other cities can claim such an incredible number of fountains; turning around the Eternal City you can find fountains everywhere, smaller or bigger but surely the Fontana della Mammelle (Fountain of the Breasts) is one of the quirkier ones. This beautiful fountain, which stands in a niche opposite the 16th century Palazzo Spada, is made up of ancient sarcophagus, a lion's head and a statue of a woman shooting water out of her breasts.
The fountain that can be admired today is a copy, because of the original one made by Francesco Borromini (1559-1667), commissioned by Cardinal Bernardino Spada, unfortunately what remains is a beautiful print of the late seventeenth century, while the current statue is the work of the artist Giuseppe Ducrot (1996)

Sulla sommità del Campidoglio c’è la Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli, un edificio che racchiude in sé incredibili sorprese e numerosi tesori artistici tra i quali la Cappella Bufalini, uno dei capolavori del Rinascimento romano. Lo straordinario ciclo di affreschi con le storie di San Bernardino da Siena (il mio santo omonimo, visto che il mio nome è un diminutivo di “Bernardino” 😁) rappresenta una tra le più importanti esperienze “romane” di Bernardino di Betto Betti, più noto come “Pinturicchio” (Perugia 1452 – Siena 1513) che a Roma aveva già collaborato con il Perugino per la decorazione della Cappella Sistina nel 1482 e affrescato la Cappella di San Girolamo in Santa Maria del Popolo (eseguita tra il 1477 e il 1479 per il cardinale Domenico della Rovere).
Il nome “Pinturicchio” o “Pintoricchio” significa letteralmente “piccolo pittore” visto che “pintor” in latino significa pittore e probabilmente ciò deriva dalla sua corporatura minuta. Questo celebre artista fu uno dei più grandi maestri della scuola umbra del secondo Quattrocento e tra il 1484-1486 realizza questo meraviglioso ciclo di affreschi per Riccomanno Bufalini (conosciuto anche come Niccolò Manno), avvocato concistoriale a Roma e di origine umbra (Città di Castello).
