In the convent-hotel where we are staying there is a plaque dedicated to an Italian-American nun that in 1943-1944 during the German occupation of Rome saved 114 Roman Jews from the deportation to Auschwitz. Her name was Sister Assunta Crocenzi.
Today is the anniversary of the deportation of 1022 Jews to Auschwitz from Rome.

I had the honor to be the guide of John and his don from Northern Irelandwhose father served in the Royal Irish Fusiliers also known as the “Faughs”, part of the 78th Division. On 17th May during Operation Diadem they Advanced from the Congo Bridge (near Sant’Angelo) to Massa Cerro in the Liri Valley, a stone farmhouse fortified by the Germans. We have a lot of information about the Royal Irish Fusiliers thanks to Captain Laurie Franklin-Vaile who wrote letters every day to his beloved wife Olivia and baby daughter Valerie. Sadly, on 17th May he and other comrades wee killed, during the attack to Massa Cerro.
We went to visit his grave at the Cassino war cemetery. Massa Cerro is only one of the few farmahouses in the Liri Valley, still standing today, among industrial estates. A stunning reminder of the battle of Cassino.
It was an emotional moment to visit the graves of 18 Young men from this unit who gave their lives in May 1944 on the advance to Rome and rest at the
