The chest crushed by a large block of stone, the body thrown back by the powerful pyroclastic flow, in a desperate attempt to escape from the eruptive fury. It is in this dramatic position that emerges the first victim of the site of the new excavations of the Regio V. The skeleton was found at the intersection of the Vicolo delle Nozze d'Argento and the Vicolo dei Balconi, recently discovered, which extends towards via di Nola. From the first observations, it appears that the individual who survived the early stages of the volcanic eruption, ventured in search of salvation along the alley now overgrown by the thick lap of lapilli. The body was in fact found at the first floor of the adjacent building, or above the lapilli layer. Here he was hit by the thick and dense pyroclastic cloud that threw him backwards.

An imposing block in stone (perhaps a jamb), dragged violently by the cloud, hit him in the upper portion, crushing the upper part of the chest and the head that, still unidentified, lie at a lower altitude than the lower limbs, probably under the lytic block. The first analysis performed by the anthropologist, during the excavation, identify an adult man aged over 30 years. The presence of lesions at the tibia level signals a bone infection, which may have been the cause of significant difficulties in walking, such as to prevent the man from escaping the first dramatic signs that preceded the eruption.

Pompeii for All. Accessibility of archaeological sites.

Accessibility to cultural heritage is a condition that is not yet taken for granted. The Pompeii Archaeological Park, through the itinerary "Pompeii for All" has distinguished itself as a model of accessibility for a benefit, without exclusions and without barriers, to be able to enjoy the common archaeological heritage, also experimenting with new technological supports.

On February 10, 2018 to celebrate the "European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018" will be presented, by the Pompeii Archaeological Park, the extension of the itinerary "Pompeii for All" , which will include a visit to the House of the Geometric Mosaics and the new experimental system of CON-ME bracelets for an accessible, inclusive and safe visit. At the Museo Temporaneo di Impresa "Temporary Enterprise Museum" of the Municipality of Pompei, in piazza Bartolo Longo, a European conference will illustrate, instead, the state of accessibility to cultural heritage in Italy and Europe.

Pompeii ruins, the second most visited archaeological site in Italy in 2017

With an increase of +7.60% in the number of visitors compared to the previous year, Pompeii ruins are the second most visited archaeological site in Italy in 2017.

Indeed, 3 millions and 382.000 were the visitors of Pompeii ruins in 2017, a figure that confirms the growth of this archaelogical site second only to the Colosseum and just before the Uffizi.

Pompeii ruins visitors account for the 6.7% of total visitors that choosed Italy in 2017: in fact about 50 millions were the tourists who crowded the archaeological sites in Italy during the last year.

«Campania region - Dario Franceschini, Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, points out - is now stable in second place in the ranking of the most virtuous regions in Italy: not only for the rebirth of Pompeii but also for the very positive experiences of autonomous management from the Royal Palace of Caserta, the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, Capodimonte and Paestum".

POMPEII RUINS: OPEN TO THE PUBLIC THE HOUSE OF SIRICO AND THE HOUSE OF THE WOUNDED BEAR Pompeii - Soprintendenza

On Wednesday, March 29 has been reopened to the public the main road of the Regio VII, at the end of security works made by project "Grande Progetto Pompei". Inside the Regio, located on the center of the archaeological area and overlooking the Forum, there are the "House of Sirico" and the "House of the Wounded Bear" for the first time open to the public. Both houses have undergone restoration and safety works. These two Houses are richly decorate, with mosaic floors, fountains, frescoes and green areas.

Sirico belonged to the political and commercial class of Pompeii and received his clientes in the domus welcoming them with the auspicious inscription SALVE LUCRU, (Welcome Profit) that could be read on the floor of the fauces of room 1. The house was excavated in the second half of the 19th century and the skeletons of five individuals were found who died in 79 AD as a result of the surges from the second eruption phase.

The House of the Wounded Bear was first excavated in 1865 and again in 1868. The property takes its name from the graphic mosaic of a wounded bear in the fauces.

The re-opening of House of the Vettii

On Friday, December 23 2016, in the presence of the Italian Prime Minister, Paolo Gentiloni and of the Minister of Heritage and cultural activities and Tourism of Italy, Dario Franceschini, it was announced the re-opening of part of the House of the Vettii. After 12 years of closure, it is returned to the public the possibility of access to one of the most famous houses of the Pompeii Archaeological Area.

The house, which had been the subject of a complex restoration event that compromised the visit for years, has undergone a consolidation work that allows us today to re-open the entrance rooms, the atrium with the surrounding cubicula and the triclinium with the splendid series of mythological frescoes.

02/01/2017

In Italy, the first day of the year was dedicated to art by a large number of people: there were many Italians and tourists who spent the 01 January 2017 visiting the many Italian museums open for free as it is usual for the first Sunday of every month.

In Rome, there were over 25.000 visitors for the Colosseo and the central archaeological area.

In Pompeii - Soprintendenza, where it was just reopened to the public the Domus of the Vettii there were 6,793 entries while the Royal Palace of Caserta reported 6,727 visitors. Good results also for the Musei Reali Torino of Turin (5,897 visitors) and the Galleria Uffizi in Florence, with 3,489 people.

In Veneto, big success at the Gallerie dell'Accademia di Venezia in Venice (1,940 entries) and at Museo Nazionale di Villa Pisani at Stra, with more than 1,200 entries and tickets soon sold out (for security reasons) to access the rooms of the villa.

No more architectural barriers in Pompeii ruins

"No more architectural barriers in Pompeii ruins" says Dario Franceschini the Italian Minister for Cultural Heritage and Tourism, opening the path for disabled in Pompeii ruins. "This is the most beautiful day since I've been Minister and the perfect culmination of a year that, with over three million entries, saw the record number of visitors to the excavation site."

This path is the longest in Italy and among the first in the world, in fact it extends for three kilometers along the principal arteries of the ancient Roman city, from the Amphitheater to Porta Marina. This special path will allow people with mobility difficulties, parents with stroller and all the tourists to visit the archaeological site in the most complete and easy as possible way, with access to the most significant places and buildings. Also expected is an electronic bracelet for blind visitors, which will allow to receive audio information along the route of the Domus.

September 27, 2016 is World Tourism Day, dedicated to the theme of accessibility.

On September 27 it will be celebrated the World Tourism Day and a number of initiatives will take place all over the world.

Tourism for all: people with disabilities, senior citizens and families travelling with small children, and sooner or later all citizens will appreciate the advantages of universal accessibility. This is why UNWTO has chosen to celebrate World Tourism Day 2016 on the theme of accessible tourism. Official celebrations will take place on 27 September in Bangkok, Thailand.

“Everyone has the right to access leisure and tourism services on an equal basis. Yet 1 billion people around the world living with disability, along with young children, seniors and persons with other access requirements, still face obstacles in accessing fundamentals of travel such as clear and reliable information, efficient transportation and public services, and a physical environment that is easy to navigate. Even with modern technologies, those with visual, hearing, mobility or cognitive impairments are being left behind in many tourism destinations.” said United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon in his official message.

"Tourism for All is the theme of World Tourism Day 2016, a goal that we are pursuing vigorously making our museums, monuments, archaeological sites and state parks increasingly accessible. If tourism is a right, it should be enjoyed by anyone, beyond the personal, economic and social conditions" says the Italian minister Dario Franceschini on the occasion of 27 September, the World Day of Tourism organized by UNWTO and this year dedicated to accessible tourism.

Pompeii ruins, staged the kitchen in the Fullonica of Stephanus

Along Via dell'Abbondanza in Pompeii, one of the two principal decumani of the city, opens the Fullonica of Stephanus. This old laundry is one of the best preserved workshops from the ancient world. It was dedicated to washing and stain removal of garments, a process carried out in communicated tanks, using not only water but also urine and clays for scouring and and soften up the tissues.

Here in the Fullonica, it has been rearranged the kitchen as he was staged in 1916 by Vittorio Spinazzola, director of excavations at the beginning of the twentieth century. Pots, plates and other metal and ceramic containers are resting on the cooking surface and hung on the kitchen wall. A staging that will be appreciated by modern tourists who come to Pompeii to discover what life was like in ancient times.

Pompeii rocks again - Forty-five years on from Pink Floyd’s famous gig there, David Gilmour returns to the ancient amphitheatre

The evening – the first concert of a two-night stand – was conceived as a special event and it was extraordinary. And the amphitheater itself – which once could hold around 18,000 revelers but tonight hosted only a couple thousand who were willing to pay at least €300 each for the intimate gig – was grown over with grass and looked exactly as it did in the film.

Evening visits in Pompeii and Herculaneum ruins

The evening visits to Pompeii and Herculaneum return, every Saturday night from May 7 to October 1, from 20:00 to 23:00 (with last entry at 22:00), thanks to development projects promoted by the Ministry of Heritage and Cultural Activities and Tourism in collaboration with the Superintendence of Pompeii. The cost of the ticket for these evening visits is € 2. Entrance from Piazza Esedra.

The paths inside the ruins of Pompeii, are enriched by the visit to the Antiquarium, a building closed several times because of the bombing of 1943 and the earthquake of 1980, and now re-opened after 36 years. The visitor will be immersed in a fascinating journey into the history of Pompei, from its origins to the daily life of up to 79 A.D. through spectacular multimedia projections and a plastic reconstruction of the ancient city "photographed" at the time of the eruption, with virtual reality applications that through mapped projections illustrate the most relevant physical locations of the city.

Guided tours are scheduled to the Herculaneum excavations too, thanks to the guides of the Archaeological Group of Vesuvius, which will accompany the visitors to the discovery of the remains of the maritime area stored in the "Padiglione della Barca", where it is also exposed the boat found on the ancient beach of Herculaneum. No reservation needed for these visits.

In the ruins of Pompeii with the electronic bracelet

Electronic bracelets to access the Pompeii ruins. Yesterday, on the first day of this test, were 35 the tourists that have taken advantage of this new opportunity offered by the Superintendent to the visitors of the archaeological area of Pompeii, the first cultural site in Italy to adopt this new system.

Tourists can ask for the electronic bracelet only at the ticket offices by the Amphitheater, where a device has been installed that allows the visitor to re-enter in the Pompeii ruins up to three times. In this way, the visitor has the opportunity to intersperse the visit to the ruins with walks outside the site, to make shopping or even for a lunch break or a visit to the Basilica of the Rosary.

Widely used by other European museums, these bracelets are using RFID technology (Radio-Frequency Identification).

Naples, restoration work of the "Ponti Rossi" to begin soon

The City Council approved the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the City of Naples and the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage of Campania for the "Recovery Project, archaeological restoration and redevelopment of the Roman aqueduct known as Ponti Rossi (Red Bridges) and of the areas adjacent to it"

The MoU provides for the sale to the City of the right of use of the final project realized by the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage, to allow its implementation through the search for the necessary funding.

The project, already shared with the relevant communities and the numerous associations working on the ground, involves the construction of a pedestrian promenade, above the monument, which restores its natural role as a bridge and connects via Ponti Rossi road with a public garden open to citizens.

The dates engraved on some lead pipes allow a precise dating of this Roman aqueduct back to the Emperor Claudius (Lugdunum, 1 August 10 BC - Rome, October 13, 54).

18/04/2016

Starting from April 20, 2016 the second stage of the great exhibition 'Egypt Pompeii' (opened on March 5 at the Egyptian Museum in Turin) comes to Pompeii ruins. On this occasion the Great Gymnasium in Pompeii ruins, recently renovated, will be open to accommodate (enhanced by a spectacular staging by Francesco Venezia) the seven monumental statues of Sekhmet, the lion-headed Egyptian god, and the magnificent seated statue of Pharaoh Thutmose I, all belonging to one periods of maximum splendor of the history of ancient Egypt: the XVIII dynasty (XVI-XIV century BC.).

These outstanding loans, from the permanent collection of the Egyptian Museum, seal and reinforce the unity of purpose and collaboration between the Turin Museum, the Pompeii Superintendence and the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, for an exhibition that wants to tell - in three different locations - the cults originated in the land of the Nile and widespread in Pompeii, placing them in a broad reflection on the interrelations between the civilizations of the ancient world that overlooked the Mediterranean Sea. The impressive granite sculptures, as well as representing the Pharaonic power at the time of the Eighteenth Dynasty, are a striking testimony to the world of the Egyptian mythology.

It is the Campania of records: museums and archaeological sites have been besieged on the Sunday 03 April, for the free Sunday at the Museum Day. At least 100,000 visitors crowded halls and pathways in the major sites of Campania, with 30,000 registered entrances only in the museums of Naples. This success strengthens and makes more evident the boom of the Pompei excavations + Reggia di Caserta, stably placed at second and third place in the list of the most visited monuments in Italy during the free opening of the first Sunday of the month. A real record for Pompeii ruins, once again, with 29,540 visitors, second only to the Colosseum of Rome which remains the most visited site with 30,818 free tickets.

The "Tomb of Agrippina" in Bacoli will reopen to the public

These remains of an empire building are, according to the tradition, the tomb of Agrippina, mother of Nero, killed in 59 AD from the will of his son (legend says that the woman came by swimming on the shores, escaping from a shipwreck but not to his fate) and buried - as Tacitus tells - along the road to Misenum.

Now one of the archaeological pearls of Campi Flegrei, in Bacoli, in Marina Grande could reopen to the public: the Tomb of Agrippina - precious theater-nymphaeum, part of a seaside villa, then destroyed - is in fact closed since many years because of precarious conditions.

But, in these hours, works of maintenance are ongoing thanks to synergy between the council and the Archaeological Superintendence of Naples.

Paestum, after twenty years reopens the temple of Neptune

Twenty years later, on Saturday 26 and on Easter Sunday 27 March 2016, the Temple of Neptune at Paestum (Salerno) will be open to the public: visitors will be able to see inside the best preserved greek temple of the peninsula, built in the fifth century BC, and so appreciate from a new perspective the Doric architecture that enchanted Piranesi, Goethe and many other famous travelers.

"The experience of entering a greek temple dated back to 2500 years ago is something that we have to share with all visitors - explains the director Gabriel Zuchtriegel - The first day that I took service at Paestum I walked in the temple and immediately thought it was necessary to take action to that effect". Recently, it said in a note, the temple of Neptune was the subject of an innovative study aimed to clarify the seismic characteristics of this millennial building, sponsored by the Archaeological Superintendence of Campania along with the Universities of Salerno and that of Kassel in Germany. The Archaeological Park of Paestum, with the various partners involved, is launching a new campaign of surveys to understand even better the structure of the temple.

Opens to the public the exhibition on the ancient Oplontis

Seventy-two exceptional Roman remains, discovered in the last century in Torre Annunziata, in the exploration of two buildings buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD: the magnificent villa A, attributed to Poppea, and the so-called villa B. Starting from March 11, 2016 statues, gold, jewelry, ceramics, architectural decorations are on display in the Municipal Palace of Torre Annunziata (open daily, from 9:30 to 13:30 and from 15:30 to 19:30; entrance tickets Euro 3, reduced tickets Euro 1.5): the seven rooms in this exhibition "provide a complete and vivid picture of society and daily life at a specific moment in the past that is unparalleled throughout the world".

Masterpieces been closed in warehouses for decades, like the statues that decorated the villa of Poppea, or the precious gold, necklaces and rings that belonged to the rich matrons living in the suburb of Pompeii. Luxury items, but also tableware, like the cups and glasses to drink wine or a large bronze pot.

And then the "Boy with the Goose" (see attached image), dated to the first century AD, one of the many replicas of a greek bronze original of the second century BC: from the bird's beak came out the water that feeds a fountain below.

Construction works are almost finished for the Line 6 of the new underground station of Naples, with stop at Piazza San Pasquale. The opening is scheduled for April. The project is signed by Boris Podrecca. To the walls have already been applied the sea blue-colored panels and the white foam of the waves. "The train starts at the top of the Chiaia - explains Podrecca - and gradually sinks in seawater". It will be a great space with walls of 3 meters and a half, where there is a large square, screens for exhibitions and cultural events. The architect's idea is "to get the traveler in the water and to create the right atmosphere. In the station there will be the works of the contemporary artist Peter Kogler.

The station will have 5 levels. The Line 6 includes the path from Mergellina to Municipio. The project was drawn up by the City of Naples and by Ansaldo technicians. Two kilometers of trail, which runs every six minutes and 6000 estimated passengers per hour. The station will open in April but it will be fully operational only in December, when it has passed the tests of the Ministry of Transport.

Egypt on display in Pompeii

Pompeii ruins, the National Archaeological Museum of Naples and the Egyptian Museum of Turin together for an exhibition - that will start on March 16 and then will continue from April 16 in the Palestra Grande of Pompeii ruins - that will tell about the Egyptian cults in Pompeii. Egyptian rites in Pompeii were carried out in different places but the Temple of Isis is the only one found where the cults were documented. "Its discovery in 1764 dates back to the first phase of the excavations - told the experts of the Pompeii Superintendency - The diggers did not know to be in front of the only one of Pompeii worship buildings that showcased a complete decoration, thanks to a fast restoration made after the earthquake of 62 AD. At the moment the eruption of 79 AD, the Temple of Isis was in fact the only public building to be completely restored".

The paintings of the Temple of Isis were removed from the temple and are preserved at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MAN), which takes part in this exhibition. At the MAN is kept a masonry grave with the burnt remains of an offering of fruit and two statues, one of which is an authentic Egyptian Ushabti (funerary statuette).

The exhibition features works from important archaeological museums in Austria, Denmark, France, Georgia, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Spain, Tunisia, United States, and the Vatican. Among these, an important role is played by the Archaeological Museum of Naples.
