"Terentius Neo and his wife" from Pompeii now in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. His wife is stylised in the exact same pose as the debated "Sappho": with similar clothing, jewellery, gold hair net, stylus and wax writing tablet. This is a common Category 4 Style piece of wall art. Extremely expensive and the painter probably travelled to do the portrait at Pompeii.

Happy 1st day of September!
September is so called as it was originally the 7th month of the Roman calendar, "septem", meaning seven.

📷 September panel from the 3rd-century AD Mosaic of the Months at El Djem (Tunisia), depicting two men crushing grapes. The grape harvest is a characteristic activity of the month in Roman art. 🍷🍇

The monumental group depicts the myth of the torture inflicted on Dirce, who was tied to an enraged bull by Amphion and Zetus as punishment for the harassment repeatedly inflicted on their mother, Antiope.

Roman copy of a famous Hellenistic sculptural group in marble. It is the largest single sculpture ever recovered from antiquity!

Johann Wolfgang Goethe

Ancient Greek Theatre Masks; exaggerated expressions helped define characters; they allowed actors to play more than one role (or gender); they helped audience members in distant seats see and, by projecting sound somewhat like a small megaphone, even hear the characters better.

The discovery of the ruins at was a complete accident: while a well was being dug in 1707 by order of Emmanuel Maurice, Prince of Lorraine, a number of marble fragments and statues that once decorated the ancient theater of Herculaneum were unearthed. In 1738, work began again under Charles III of Bourbon led by the Spanish military engineer De Alcubierre.

POMPEI - It was 16 July 1910, 112 years ago. , Director of the excavations at , began to work along the Via dell'Abbondanza, describing it as 'more precious than any object of art'. Spinazzola's excavations along the Via dell'Abbondanza brought to light the first façades of houses and shops, bringing to light wonderful details of painted signs, paintings of sumptuous villas and valuable decorations. Pompeii was beginning to resurface after centuries of oblivion. An interesting roundup of period photos bearing witness to those splendid days. 📽

1860, when southern Italy was more industrialised than northern Europe.

The most industrialised regions of Italy, before 1860, were Campania, Calabria and Apulia: for levels of industrialisation, the Two Sicilies ranked first in Europe.
In Calabria, the Mongiana steelworks, with two blast furnaces for cast iron, two Wilkinson furnaces for iron and six refineries, employed 2,500 workers.
The decentralised silk industry employed over 3,000 people.

The largest engineering factory in the kingdom was that of Pietrarsa, (between Naples and Portici), with over 1,200 workers: a record for Italy at the time.
Behind Pietrarsa was Ansaldo in Genoa, with 400 workers.
The Neapolitan plant produced steam engines, locomotives and ship engines, preceding Breda and Fiat by 44 years.

In Castellammare di Stabia, the most important and technologically advanced shipyards in Italy operated from the end of the 18th century.
It was here that the first steamship, the Real Ferdinando, was built, four years before the first English steamship.
From Castellammare di came the first propeller-driven ship in Italy and the first iron ship. Technology had also entered agriculture, where mechanical plants were used for the production of oil in Apulia, which greatly increased production.

Abruzzo was important for its paper mills (those of Lower Lazio and the Amalfi Peninsula were also strong), blade manufacture and textile industries.
Sicily exported sulphur, very precious at the time, especially to the province of Caltanissetta, at the time one of the richest and most industrialised cities in Italy. There were commercial ports in Sicily from which ships sailed all over the world, especially the United States and the Americas. Finally, Sicily's chemical industry was important, producing all the components and synthetic materials known at the time, acids, paints, glass.

Puglia and Basilicata were important for their woolen and textile industries, many of which were already motorised. Technology had also entered agriculture, where mechanical plants were used for oil production in Apulia, which greatly increased production.
Apulian agricultural machinery was considered among the best in Europe. The most important stock exchange in the kingdom was in Bari.

Once the Two Sicilies were occupied, the government in Turin began the 'cynical and systematic' dismantling of the industrial fabric of what had become the 'southern provinces'. Pietrarsa (where in 1862 the bersaglieri carried out a bloody massacre of workers to defend the claims of the private owner who was entrusted with the factory) was condemned to an unstoppable decline.
In the Castellammare shipyards, 400 workers were fired on the spot.
The Mongiana steelworks were quickly closed, while the Ferdinandea di Stilo (with no less than 5,000 hectares of surrounding woods) was sold for a pittance to a 'Garibaldian colonel', who had come to Calabria following the 'liberators' 🤔🤨.

Pompeii. The discovery of a 2000-year-old tortoise and its egg. 🐢

The remains of a land tortoise, a tortoise, with its fragile egg enshrined in its carapace, found in a workshop in Via dell'Abbondanza; evidence of Pompeii's vast ecosystem, made up of natural and not just anthropic traces, and a precious archaeological clue to the last phase of the city's life, after a violent earthquake in 62 AD and before the fateful eruption of 79 AD.

The unusual find took place as part of an excavation and research campaign on the Stabian baths, conducted by the Freie Universität Berlin and the University of Naples L'Orientale, with the University of Oxford in collaboration with the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, aimed at investigating the urban development of the residential area before the baths were built. In particular, the remains of a sumptuous domus with refined mosaics and wall paintings, dating back to the 1st century B.C. and razed to the ground after the earthquake that devastated Pompeii and large parts of Campania in 62 A.D., emerged in the workshops on the south-eastern side of the baths along Via dell'Abbondanza and Vicolo del Lupanare. Later, the area was used for the extension of the bath complex on the crossroads between Via dell'Abbondanza and Via Stabiana.

The skeleton of a horse and the House of Ceres, two important new additions to the visit offerings of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. From today, the House of Ceres opens to the public, following the completion of works that involved the restoration of the decorative apparatus, from the mosaic floors to the early style frescoes, the re-roofing and the restoration of the garden with the cultivation of cereals, barley and wheat and other species inspired by the cults of Ceres.
The dwelling owes its name to the terracotta bust of the goddess Ceres, goddess of the earth and fertility, deity of harvests, found in one of the rooms opening onto the atrium, and probably part of the furnishings of a small domestic place of worship.

The domus has also been the subject of a plan to enhance and improve the path of fruition, which includes the artistic illumination of the decorative apparatus, the construction of a walkway connecting the atrium and the garden, and the display in showcases of artefacts found in the house.

Along the same Via di Castricio, on which the house overlooks, in a room opposite, visitors will be able to return to admire the skeleton of an equid found in 1938 by Amedeo Maiuri, following restoration and enhancement work that has allowed it to be displayed in a more scientifically correct position, with a new structure and materials, suited to the microclimate and able to ensure the necessary conditions for the protection of the horse.
