The Spanish Steps in Rome

The magnificent stairway of Trinità dei Monti, an eighteenth-century masterpiece, was built between 1723 and 1726 by the architect Francesco De Sanctis. The structure served as a link between the slopes of the Pincio dominated by the church of the Santissima Trinità and the underlying Piazza di Spagna. The stairway, in travertine, is made up of a series of ramps, 11, each made up of 12 steps, which divide and reunite, constantly changing direction. From any position it is possible to enjoy a magnificent panorama of the square.

The Testaccio Carnival has medieval origin

The memory of the Testaccio carnival is linked to the Ludus Testaccie: it was a celebration of the carnival genre, the first traces of which date back to 1256, when he was Pope Alexander IV. The games lasted until 1466 and were particularly cruel: the party participants enjoyed throwing the animals from the mountain; pigs, wild boars and bulls were sacrificed which the lusores then pierced, to kill and eat them. It was a closely contested race to be the first to get hold of the beasts’ flesh.

Gladiator fights were abolished in 404 AD

The gladiatorial activity was abolished in 404 by Honorius I. Already the emperor Constantine did everything possible to put an end to the barbarism of the Colosseum, however it was only in 404 that the shows ended completely.

The battles were abolished following an accident in which the Greek monk Almacchio (or Telemachus) was killed, who went down to the Arena to protest against these abominable tortures. The Roman Epiphany

DID YOU KNOW THAT … the symbolized mother nature and was the real protagonist of the exchange of gifts? His figure is documented in Italy as early as the nineteenth century in particular peasant festivals that involved the creation of a wooden puppet in the shape of an elderly lady. The old woman was first filled with tasty gifts: chestnuts, dried fruits, grapes, apples and pears, then she was sawn, thus favoring the distribution of the content area, to be finally burned at the stake. In many countries and even some Italian cities this tradition still lives on. The Befana symbolized Mother Nature who dried up and aged was a metaphor for the year she lived, drained of her energy but still capable of leaving new seeds, gifts and sweets, before dying, leaving her latent energy in the coal, ready to shine with new heat. Here, then, that the traditional exchange of gifts became his prerogative, replacing in a Christian vision the function performed by the Magi and becoming the undisputed protagonist of the youngest who anxiously awaited him in a mixture of joy and fear before being supplanted by the more bulky figure Santa Claus.

The history of Testaccio district in Rome

The neighborhood develops around Monte dei Cocci, an artificial hill born from the accumulation of discarded Roman amphorae. The shards were neatly arranged in various layers; if you find yourself on the hill, know that under your feet are the remains of more than fifty million amphorae that contained oil and other commodities. The hill has a perimeter of about one kilometer and is about 50 meters high. Why were these amphorae thrown away?

In 1939 the Circus Maximus was transformed into a gigantic seaside village

On July 26th 1939, the newspaper Luce announced the “festive opening of the seaside village at the Circus Maximus”. The area, built in the space of the gigantic and ancient stadium, was a place to relax, sunbathe and swim. The structure, born close to the ruins of the Palatine, was equipped with three large swimming pools plus various other fields, intended for sports of all kinds, as well as a whole series of useful services, with attractions and entertainment.

Villa D’Este in Tivoli. Neptune Fountain

Villa d’Este, masterpiece of the Italian Garden, is included in the UNESCO world heritage list. With its impressive concentration of fountains, nymphs, grottoes, plays of water, and music, it constitutes a much-copied model for European gardens in the mannerist and baroque styles. The garden is generally considered within the larger and altogether extraordinary context of Tivoli itself: its landscape, art and history which includes the important ruins of ancient villas such as the Villa Adriana, as well as a zone rich in caves and waterfalls displaying the unending battle between water and stone. The imposing constructions and the series of terraces above terraces bring to mind the hanging gardens of Babylon, one of the wonders of the ancient world. The addition of water-- including an aqueduct tunneling beneath the city evokes the engineering skill of the Romans themselves. Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este, after the disappointment of a failed bid for the papacy, brought back to life here the splendor of the courts of Ferrara, Rome and Fontainebleau and revived the magnificence of Villa Adriana. Governor of Tivoli from 1550, he immediately nurtured the idea of realizing a garden in the hanging cliffs of the “Valle gaudente”, but it was only after 1560 that his architectural and iconographic program became clear—brainchild of the painter-architect-archeologist Pirro Ligorio and realized by court architect Alberto Galvani. The rooms of the Palace were decorated under the tutelage of the stars of the late Roman Mannerism, such as Livio Agresti, Federico Zuccari, Durante Alberti, Girolamo Muziano, Cesare Nebbia and Antonio Tempesta. The work was almost complete at the time of the Cardinal’s death (1572)….
