RE.CO.RD. to preserve the Adriatic sea

ADRIATIC SEA CALLING: S.O.S.

Marine pollution is one of the biggest environmental problems, mainly due to plastic waste dropping in water from the coasts. Marine litter has two major adverse effects on natural life: ingestion and entrapment of sea fauna. According to "Marine Litter 2014" report, the Adriatic Sea has an average of 27 floating waste per every square kilometre, with a huge majority of plastic waste (90%).

According to the annual report of the tourist movement in the Apulia Region (Italy) for the year 2015, the town of Otranto has hosted over 691,000 tourists and the Municipality of Santa Cesarea over 87,000. Lefkada is a beautiful Greek island with great history and luxuriant natural resources, which are affecting the island’s image towards its tourists and citizens.

RE.CO.RD HERE: ROGER THAT

RE.CO.RD will introduce gradually environment-friendly sustainable technologies and processes to manage plastic waste and specifically to promote a model of sustainable use of the coasts.

This project aims to reduce the environmental impact of economic activities related to touristic use of coastal areas, closely linked to waste presence in these areas (and as a direct result, to decrease marine pollution), with focus on the active participation of the population and on the introduction of new technologies leading to recycling of plastic materials.

Its ultimate aims are to maintain biodiversity and help keeping dynamic, clean, healthy and productive seas.

WHAT RE.CO.RD. WILL ACHIEVE

Twoexperimental prototypesof our recycling technology, implemented by University of Salento DSSS (Italy) and University of Ioannina- Special Account for research Fund (Greece)

Six demonstrative actions for collecting, weighing and recycling plastic materials directly near the beaches, three in each country

An evaluation report about environmental and economic impact of applied technologies, in particular in terms of cost and sustainability

training and awareness activities, to involve the stakeholders and to transfer them the know-how:

1 international training session in Greece targeted to professionals and technicians;

2 training courses targeted to beach operators;

3 creative laboratories for schools;

a final video documentary for citizens empowerment and networking, supply chain and territorial initiatives.

RE.CO.RD. will increase for 10% level of capacity of regional and local authorities and public utilities operators to integrate environmental friendly technologies in their operations with special attention to the coastal and maritime zones.
