November morning, from Anzio Beach Head
Anzio Stalemate!
After the failure of the offensive on February 29, the 14th German Army had exhausted its offensive capabilities and limited itself to starting a phase of containment of the opponent. All the more so as it became necessary for the Germans to maintain their strength and attention on the Cassino sector, where already in mid-February the V ^ Army had launched an offensive aimed also and above all at easing the pressure on Anzio.
For their part, the allies devoted every effort to strengthening the defenses by fortifying their positions and reorganizing their forces. In March the very tried 56th British Infantry Division was replaced by the 5th British Infantry Division which took control of the East sector along the Moletta stream. At the center of the deployment remained the 1st British Infantry Division and the 45th American Infantry Division while the 3rd US Division continued to garrison the western flank with the 1st Special Service Force deployed along the Mussolini canal, on the far west flank , to the sea. The US 1st Armored Division was kept in reserve. Also in March the battalions of US paratroopers were withdrawn, compensated by the landing, as reinforcement, of the 34th American Infantry Division at the end of the same month.
From that moment on, a long phase of attrition and stagnation of operations began. The bridgehead was beaten for its entire extent by the German artillery which also used for this purpose two heavy 280 mm guns, on railway carriage, which fired from the Alban hills.
The air raids of the German air force helped to maintain constant pressure on the allied troops. The units of the opposing opponents faced each other in this way for more than two months, waging a grueling trench warfare.
