The only manuscript by Vivaldi left in Venice today is an aria titled "Sovvente il Sole" part of the serenade "Andromeda Liberata" that was performed on 18th September 1726 on occasion of Cardinal Ottoboni's return to Venice. This unique music score is now preserved in the archives of the venetian Conservatory which, curiously enough, is named after one of Vivaldi's greatest competitors: Benedetto Marcello!

All hail the Queen of Venice Carnival: the "fritola"! During the times of the Serenissima, this treat was a favoured street food eaten all year round. These days, however, its production is mostly limited to Carnival days, so better seize every opportunity to savour this little fried pancakes (stuffed with raising, pine-nuts or cream) as long as the festivity lasts! Here are some pictures from last Sunday's walking tour & food tasting together with my friend and her group : what fun!

Today's lunch was a spectacular (and pretty strong!) Spritz cocktail with red-chicory bitter and a selection of delicious "cicheti" tapas! The word "cicheti" may come from the French verb "chiqueter", which means "to mince" or "cut in small pieces": a reference to the small size of these typical bites!

On Epiphany's Eve, all throughout Italy, bonfires will be lit in the countryside, seashores and mountain clearings to celebrate the end of winter and spring's prompt return. In early 20th Century, this rite was clearly celebrated in Venice, too, as this painting from impressionist artist Italico Brass (recently displayed on occasion of his monographic exhibition at the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere e Arti) shows.

Marco A***n was a rich venetian merchant killed by the black plague in 1349. In his last will, he bequeathed a large sum of money to build a water well for the needs of his fellow parishioners. The well, embellished by a long inscription and by the man's monogram/trade symbol, remains a memory of his generosity to these days.

What better way to finish a tour of the Doge's Palace than enjoying 's live concert from its very loggias? This amazing choir of 250 venetian singers is directed by the extremely talented glass master, novelist, composer (etc etc) . It was a moment of pure bliss, thank you for such an incredible performance!

Felice Giornata Nazionale del Gatto da Poldo (mascotte della Libreria Goldoni in Calle dei Fabbri), Pierre (custode di Campo Manin) e Dominique (dolcissima inquilina della Libreria Acqua Alta)! Sono solo alcuni dei mici che è facile incontrare passeggiando per Venezia, e che oggi tutta l'Italia celebra. La data del 17 Febbraio fu scelta nel 1990 dai lettori di "Tuttogatto" (una piccola rivista per amanti dei felini) tramite un sondaggio per omaggiare, fra le altre cose, le proverbiali sette vite di questi adorabili pelosetti. Lo sapevate?

On 9th January 1878 Victor Emmanuel II, the "gentleman king" and first ruler of unified Italy, died in Rome. 10 years later an equestrian monument made by sculptor Ettore Ferrari was placed in Venice at the behest of his son, Umberto I. Its granite pedestal is flanked by two beautiful bronze statues representing, on one side, Venice crushed back into submission by the Hapsburg in 1849, and the freed city joining Italy in 1866 on the other. The winged lion of St.Mark that angrily bites its shackles by the former, is replaced by the one showing the result of the city's annexion plebiscite by the latter. This is one of my favourite artworks in Venice: join our tour of Castello to see it up close and learn more about its story!

Alcune foto dall'entusiasmante "Nordic Walking Tour" di ieri! 😍 Grazie infinite all'instancabile Igea Citton e allo splendido gruppo di "camminatori" dell'ASD Passo Punto Zero per aver voluto scoprire assieme le gemme nascoste di Dorsoduro! Da Rio Terá dei Pensieri a S.Nicolò dei Mendicoli, da S.Sebastiano a Punta de la Dogana, passando per la dimora di Peggy Guggenheim, il "Palazzo Maledetto" e la Basilica della Salute! Un pomeriggio assolutamente magico, illuminato da luci natalizie, musica e tanto, tanto divertimento...assolutamente da rifare!

One of the most cherished festivity in Venice is for sure "La Salute" ("the feast of Good Health"). Celebrated every 21st November, it renews the city's thanks for the end of the terrible Black Plague outbreak of 1630-31. After having crossed a temporary boat bridge on the Grand Canal, Venetians go on procession to the Basilica of Holy Mary of Good Health, light a candle and pray for the well being of their loved ones by the byzantine "Mesopanditissa" icon. It is a deeply moving and truly magical experience!

At 7.43AM on 13th October 1822 Antonio Canova passed away in Venice, in the house of his long-time friend Valentino Francesconi. Today, on occasion of its 200th Anniversary, his Cenotaph was officially inaugurated after a long restoration. A huge thanks to the Venice in Peril Fund and to the many, dedicated professionals who brought this wonder back to its former glory!
