GRAEME CHINERY
ASSOCIATE MECHANICAL ENGINEER

Graeme started his career with private Building Services partnerships, working throughout the East Anglia and London regions. He was instilled from an early stage as a mechanically-biased Engineer rather than a single focus discipline, which has lead in him good stead since. In 2007 came a move to south Wales and large multi-discipline Consultancy work, with an opportunity to further widen his experience of meeting Client expectations in a progressive energy-focussed market, prior to his transition to Jersey Energy.

With nearly three decades in building services, Graeme’s portfolio covers a broad spectrum of projects across private, public and government sector Clients, on residential, commercial and industrial, historic, education, healthcare and pharmaceutical schemes.
Whilst experienced in all aspects of mechanical building services, Graeme’s particular interest has long been with low carbon and sustainable energy solutions to meet the growing environmental needs of his Clients’ buildings.

This project comprised the construction of a new community centre on the Island.

Jersey Energy were appointed to provide a full design and detailed specification of both the mechanical and electrical elements of the project. This included producing fully co-ordinated and detailed drawings and liaising with all members of the design team and the client to ensure that the contract ran as smoothly as possible.

Low surface temperature radiators were utilised together with perimeter trench heating to offset downdraughts from full height windows. Energy efficient heat reclaim ventilation has been installed to all function rooms to ensure fresh air requirements are met while under full occupancy. Low energy LED lighting was used throughout to ensure energy consumption was kept to a minimum.

Jersey Energy have been employed on various highly complex projects, developing initial feasibility proposals in surveying suitable sites and producing a complete and detailed 3D model of the installation before the first cable is laid and have provided a range of technical services for multiple Data Centre Facilities built and operated by JT.

Modelling allows the client team to see exactly what the finished project would look like, foreseeing any potential problems and issues at a stage where they could be easily amended without incurring any contractor costs. Designs include HV Generator sets, UPS systems, racking power layouts and net commanders as well as the substantial cooling requirements for a data centre to operate.

Projects are fully managed by our team including weekly site visits and project team meetings to ensure the highest service is provided to the client. Jersey Energy provided design and technical support services for 3 new Data Centres built by JT over the last few years, carrying out multiple feasibility and due diligence type activities and setting the C. I. benchmark for resilient and robustly designed and performing Data Centres.

Jersey Energy employed the use of 3D modelling (BIM Style) solutions to provide early representations of the facility which helped the construction team understand the objectives and also enable JT to promote the sale of the facility with fly-throughs and realistic stills showing the end product. This enabled marketing of the development to commence prior to works commencing on site.

Jersey Energy once again designed and managed all the Mechanical & Electrical services for the new CICS Headquarters on Don Street, St. Helier.

In collaboration with interior designers Axis Mason, new air conditioning and ventilation systems were installed into this existing converted building, which involved designing around limited external plant space. Low energy lighting and control systems have also been utilised to their full effect as CICS have now become one of the leading local companies in reducing their carbon footprint.

One of the more unique features designed and implemented by Jersey Energy is the inclusion of a “Heliobus” system. This system is based on existing technology but improves upon this concept to produce a much greater level of natural daylight being transferred into an office. The CICS Don Street premises can now boast of being one of the first in the UK to utilise this type of technology, saving both energy and carbon as well as creating a more natural atmosphere for staff who would otherwise not be near a window for natural daylight.

Jersey Energy were involved at the very early stages to look at sustainable and renewable options for the project. As part of this process, window positions were adjusted to provide better/improved natural lighting as well as sky lights added to the top floor to improve the openness and feel of the space.
