Have been in UK this past week, but in readiness for this coming week’s discussions in Caen on how Normandy, of which we were a part, will celebrate 1,000 years since the birth of William the Conqueror- I called in at couple of places with William connections.
PEVENSEY - where the Normans landed before fighting ‘the Battle of Hastings.’
UPEXE One of the 20 or so ‘English Manors’ recorded in the Domesday Book, given to Onfrai and Mauger De Carteret by William for fighting with him at ‘the Battle.’
WI******ER CASTLE- One of William’s first castles, built in 1067, an important royal residence until the 14th C. In the early 13th C- the Constable was Renaud de Carteret.
THE NEW FOREST- created by William for hunting.

Brilliant evening celebrating 100 years since the discovery of La Hougue Bie, Arthur Mourant, poetry, Jèrriais and Charles Maulevrier’s ‘stone music’ inside the tomb- what an installation.

Geopark Strategy meeting culminated in incredible Seafaris trip from St Catherine to La Cotte à La Chèvre, accompanied by Dolphins. Thankyou Millie, Paul and Jersey’s Aspiring Geopark.

Today’s offering from Orkney- wet and windy but didn’t reduce the enjoyment:
The incomparable Skara Brae
The Kitchener memorial- 737 died, including Kitchener, in 1916 when the HMS Hampshire struck a mine + bonus of puffins on the cliff below!
The Barony working water mill
Quaint Stromness
Orkney museum- so much to see, especially the archaeology, but not an ideal space- loved the straw Orkney Chairs!
