No more snow? 95% chance globe sees record-breaking temperatures this winter

A must read!

BEIJING, China — We could potentially forget about a white Christmas this year because of global warming. As scorching heatwaves dominated the globe throughout the summer and fall of 2023, concerns rose about the possibility of an unprecedented warm winter ahead. Now, researchers are warning that the globe could see record-breaking temperatures this winter.

During June to October 2023, global temperatures soared well above the 1991-2020 average by significant margins. August and September, in particular, exceeded historical averages by 0.62 degrees Celsius and 0.69 degrees Celsius respectively, breaking records set in 2016. This alarming trend, fueled by both global warming and the reappearance of the El Niño phenomenon after seven years, has captured worldwide attention.

To assess the potential impact of these developments, the Short-Term Climate Prediction Team at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, undertook extensive research. Their latest findings suggest an imminent Eastern Pacific El Niño, categorized as moderate to strong, which is expected to trigger unusual weather patterns across East Asia and North America, according to a media release.

The report highlights the combined influence of the El Niño event and the ongoing global warming trend, painting a concerning picture for the 2023/24 winter. There’s a 95 percent likelihood that this winter will break historical temperature records globally, with regions in mid-low latitudes of Eurasia and most parts of the Americas bracing for an exceptionally warm season. In China, winter temperatures might even double the usual averages, potentially marking the highest winter temperatures since 1991.

Understanding climate predictions involves considering not only internal variability but also external factors. Recent research points to the impact of external forces such as the 2019 Australian wildfires, which played a role in triggering multi-year La Niñas. These wildfires created low clouds over the Southern Ocean, reducing sea surface temperatures and influencing the climatic system.

Moreover, historical data on volcanic eruptions in the Southern Hemisphere, as studied by the Sun Yat-sen University Volcanic Research Team, reveals a correlation between eruptions and subsequent La Niña occurrences over three years. This underscores the potential cooling effect of volcanic aerosols on the Southern Ocean, similar to the cooling caused by wildfire-induced cloud formation.

As the world braces for potentially record-breaking warmth this winter, these findings underline the complex interplay of factors shaping our climate and the need for continued research to better understand and anticipate these patterns.

The latest forecast update has been released by the ECMWF, and it shows a strong Winter weather pattern developing for the eastern United States in January and February. With the high pressure over the Polar regions and the El Nino event in the Pacific, there is likely an interesting season ahead.

A low-pressure area is forecast to develop over the eastern United States and northern Europe in January and last into February. This is something that the earlier winter forecasts were calling for.

The image below shows one of the variations of such a large-scale pattern, with a strong low-pressure area over the eastern United States, bringing cold weather and snow across the part of the country.

The report also said Jamaica scored 75 out of a maximum 100 points, which ranks the island among the safest countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, coming slightly ahead of the US territory of Puerto Rico at 74; followed by Brazil, 73; Argentina, 70; Mexico, 66; Venezuela, 66; the Dominican Republic, 64; Peru, 61 ...

Belmont - Westmoreland

Reggae fans should check out Peter Tosh's birthplace and Mausoleum in Belmont. The reggae musician was born in Belmont and lived here before moving to Kingston. In Kingston he teamed up with Bob Marley to become one of the original Wailers. He was killed by gunmen robbing his house in 1987 and his body was moved back to Belmont where the mausoleum was established.

Belmont, Westmoreland
Look out for the brightly coloured gates on the main road from Black River to Savanna-la-Mar. The mausoleum can be found about 50 meters inland from these gates. There is no formal fee for visiting the mausoleum but a donation is expected.

You may meet members of Peter Tosh's family on your visit, many still live in Belmont.

This place is located In Bluefiled WESTMORELAND we have tour guides available so it matters not where you stay it’s how you get about in jamaica

Bluefields is one of the oldest settled areas in Jamaica, and was built by the Spanish in the 17th century. After the expulsion of the Spanish by the British, the city withered, but the bay was still used, especially by pirates. Nowadays, the community has managed to curb the piracy, although the bay is still used by avid seafarers to launch legitimate (albeit not as exciting) fishing expeditions. In spite of its intriguing history, most Jamaicans immediately associate Bluefields with the pristine beach set against verdant rolling hills, a popular destination for locals, especially on public holidays.

Local Flavour:
The Bluefields People's Community Association is a not-for-profit grassroots organization that sprang up in the late 1980s. The organization, which has received much international recognition, promotes sustainable social and economic development for the people of Bluefields and surrounding communities by fostering small business and agricultural development programs. Volunteers from around the world have come to Bluefields and worked with Jamaicans to create and implement community development structures, and the friendships formed through these alliances have added much value to an authentic Jamaican experience.

Famous For:
Bluefields Beach Park is one of the most popular beaches among Jamaicans. On weekends and public holidays, the park comes alive with the delightful smells and sounds of family picnics, with, of course, Reggae music playing in the background. The beach is remarkable, and large enough for everyone to enjoy his or her own space to relax and socialize on the powdery white sand or in the clear warm water.

Don't Miss:
The small community of Belmont falls in the Bluefields area, and in a small yard off the main road is the Peter Tosh Memorial. Peter Tosh, world-renowned Reggae artist, outspoken and militant poet and songwriter, was one of the original Wailers who shared Bob Marley's initial rise to fame. Tosh spent his early years in the community before moving to Trench Town in Kingston where he met Livingston "Bunny" Wailer and Bob Marley, when the three combined talents to form the Wailers. His mother and stepfather still share a humble house behind the memorial, a small open building containing Tosh's tomb and some memorabilia.

Say Hello To:
Wolde Kristos is an extremely outgoing young man with great dreams and the drive to achieve them. He is a community activist who works with the Bluefields People's Community Association organizing projects and securing funding for the organization. Wolde has lived in the Bluefields area all his life, and knows almost everyone in the district, as well as much of the history of the region. Stop in at the BPCA office along the main road and ask for him; he can also help to organize Volunteer/Working holidays, home stays and small excursions into the area.
