LET'S VISIT LUCEA

The coastal town of Lucea is the capital of the parish of Hanover, Jamaica’s second smallest parish.

The picturesque rural town is nestled on the fringes of the Lucea harbour, 22 miles east of Negril and 25 miles west of Montego Bay.

The town houses a significant number of historical buildings and sites, many of which date back to the 1700s. Some sections of the town have been given nicknames by parishioners over the decades, after they became synonymous with particular types of activities.

“Lucea Verandah”: Here, is where the town's four main roads - Willie Delisser Boulevard, Hanover Street, Seaview and Miller's Drive intersect. It is the unofficial evening chill-spot particularly for men who use the area to relax, chat with their friends or watch the vehicles pass by before heading home.

Lucea Verandah is also a major Small Business hub. It is the area where jerk chicken vendors set up their mobile carts in the evenings, making the town come alive as people stop to patronize.

Mosley Drive, which is also known as Donkey Avenue, got its name as it was a “donkey parking and rest stop”, even up to the 1990s, when farmers - both men and women - from villages such as St. Simon, Fat Hog Quarters, Baulk and First Hill, who took their produce to the town’s food market, would tether the jackasses at the bottom section of the roadway.

Today, there are no more donkeys lining the roadway, since the liberalisation of motor vehicles in Jamaica. Instead about 60 metres along the stretch is designated as municipal paid parking areas. There are also a few small businesses in the area, including an internet service provider and a cook shop.

In close proximity is the Jamaica National Bank, a Rubis Gas Station, Uptown Mall which houses the commercial offices of the Jamaica Public Service Company, Victim Support Unit, National Housing Trust, The Insurance Company of the West Indies and the Electoral Office of Jamaica; and Kings Plaza also known as Kreamy King Plaza, which is home to other businesses including a medical facility and a land surveying office.

Bustamante Square (Lucea Square): This is the town centre, named in honour of the late National Hero and first Prime Minister of Independent Jamaica, Sir Alexander Bustamante who was born in Hanover.

Bustamante Square is home to the Tax Office, the Hanover Municipal Corporation, the post office and a Bill Express payment centre, as well as the Lucea police station. It was home for many years to Scotiabank; however that bank withdrew from the town and its former location is now being prepared to house the parish offices of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.

Hanover Street or Main Street is the main commercial street in the town. It is home to several supermarkets, a farm store, a pub, haberdasheries, a cell phone store, and a bakery.

The Lucea Cleveland Stanhope Market is only occupied by a handful of vendors, as most have set up operations in what used to be the market’s car park. At the back of the market is the Lucea Fish Vendor market which is also adjacent to the Lucea Fishing Beach.

Lucea is JUTA Lucea's home town...we can surely take you there!

By Alecia Leon:

There are many reasons for lovers of flowers and nature to travel to Jamaica, chief among them, the more than 220 species of orchids, 66 of which can be found nowhere else in the world.
Orchids are an important part of Jamaica’s natural heritage. They have been used in the horticultural industry for many, many years.
Apart from their beauty, orchids have been used for centuries for food and medicine. Some species have been found to have wound healing properties and have been used for coughs and colds, for inflammation, constipation, gastritis and tonsillitis, among other things.
Orchids grow everywhere across Jamaica and may be epiphytic (on trees); terrestrial (on the ground); lithophytic (on rocks); saprophytic (on dead materials and having no green parts) or subterranean (underground).
There are three major Orchid Shows in Jamaica each year. These are usually held between February and March, by each of the three Orchid Clubs on the island. These shows are onn an extensive list of things to do while in Jamaica.
The Ocho Rios Orchid Society’s Show was held at the Couples Sans Souci Hotel at White River in Prospect St. Mary; the Montego Bay Orchid Society’s Show was held at the Pier One lawns in Montego Bay for two days and the Jamaica Orchid show was held in the beautiful, lush Hope pastures in Kingston also for two days in March 2017.
These shows were absolute successes and next year promises to be just at great, if not greater!

DOLPHIN HEAD MOUNTAINS, HANOVER, JAMAICA - RICH IN BIODIVERSITY

A hike up to the Dolphin Head Mountain Peak in Askenish, Hanover, or a trip through its outlying communities clustered around the mountainside, is an absolutely perfect way for visitors to the island to experience the authentic Jamaican environment and culture.

The peak of the Dolphin Head Mountain stands, 1789 feet above sea level. The mountain range got its name as the crest from afar looks like the head of the Jamaican bottle-nose dolphin.

A hike, from Rockfoot in Askenish, to the mountain peak is a fascinating eco-adventure, for birdwatchers, conservationists and those interested in nature and the environment.

The Dolphin Head Mountain Range is of great international importance. The area is especially rich in endemic flora and fauna and is well fruited. In facts, the area has more rare or threatened plant species per unit area than anywhere else in Jamaica.

The approximately 1300 hectares in the Dolphin Head area contain 576 species of vascular plants, of which 162 are endemic to the island. Twenty of these plants are endemic to Dolphin Head which means they can only be found in Dolphin Head and nowhere else in the world.

In July 2017, the Dolphin Head Forest Reserve received the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy award, after it was designated one of the best examples of forest management throughout the Commonwealth.

This award cemented Dolphin Head’s place as one of 24 forest reserves in as many countries — five of which are in the Caribbean — that are part of the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy.

Rivers, tributaries and a large number of waterfalls as well as caves can be found within the most elevated sections of the mountain range which spans communities such as Askenish, Clifton, Medley, Chambers Pen, Mt Carmel, Rugland and Retirement.

The people who live in the Dolphin Head area are as beautiful, peaceful and giving as the mountain itself.

Dolphin Head is the real Jamaica, an off-the-beaten path adventure through a glorious setting in a tropical limestone forest.

And of course, JUTA Lucea... we will take you there.

Reflections:

Ten (10) years ago JUTA Lucea Chapter was one of the major sponsors of the "Keep St Simon Litter-free" environmental campaign, at the St Simon Primary School in Lucea.

JUTA Lucea's support contributed to excursions such a glass bottom boat ride for art 5th and 6th graders and trips to resorts and ecotourism sites. In this photo are three happy 6th graders on a glass bottom boat in the beautiful Lucea harbour.

In the background is the beautiful Grand Palladium Hotel.

Watersports activities taking place in the beautiful, horseshoe-shaped Lucea Harbour in Hanover. Motorised watersports activities are infrequent here, but residents swim a lot on the eastern end of the harbour where most of the longer beach strips are located.

The Lucea harbour also has some of the most breathtaking coral reefs, on Jamaica's northwestern coast. Sometimes you might be fortunate enough to see a dolphin or two passing by.
