Last week, the from Sciences Po University in France 🇫🇷 flew to Jordan 🇯🇴for their annual global trip. Zoor took the group on a tour for the first 2 days, in which we visited the Ottoman Old Railway in Wadi Rum, discovered inscriptions and many sites in the desert, went on Jeep Safaris, had some amazing Magloubeh and Zarb, and spent the night at a private camp. The next day, the group headed to Petra for a day visit where our guide revealed so much about the history of the place as well as the art of carving. The group then ended the trip in Amman at an accommodation arranged by Zoor as well.

Aya and Dareen went with Zoor to Petra and Wadi Rum earlier this month. On our way to Petra, we stopped by the smallest hotel in the world. Abo Ali, the owner, gave us some history lessons about the Jordanian and Palestinian tribes. We then visited Petra, had Sajeyyeh for lunch, and headed to Wadi Rum to stay at one of our partner camps, The Sun City. Here’s what they said about the trip:

Today marks the 14th anniversary since Petra became the 2nd World Wonder on 7/7/2007. The cultural, spiritual, and historical treasures found in every carving in this Nabetean city show us nothing but perseverance, dignity, and loyalty of its people. Tough as its rocks and staunch as its mountains, I am sincerely proud to be one of the ancestors of this land.

Thus begins Marguerite van Geldermalsen's story of how a New Zealand-born nurse came to be married to Mohammad Abdallah Othman, a Bedouin souvenir-seller from the ancient city of Petra in Jordan. It was 1978 and she and a friend were travelling through the Middle East when Marguerite met the charismatic Mohammad who convinced her that he was the man for her.

A life with Mohammad meant moving into his ancient cave and learning to love the regular tasks of baking shrak bread on an open fire and collecting water from the spring. And as Marguerite feels herself becoming part of the Bedouin community, she is thankful for the twist in fate that has led her to this contented life.

Marguerite's light-hearted and guileless observations of the people she comes to love are as heart-warming as they are valuable, charting Bedouin traditions now lost to the modern world.
