During festival time, the whole village would participate in a tug of war. Back then, it used to take days to get to Tokyo, not that the villagers went there. In fact, some villagers spent their whole lives here, never knowing what it was like to be in the capital. Instead, they carved toys out of wood, collected baby bees for tempura or stir fry, and made their own kind of very thick soba, now famous around Japan as Itsukidani soba.

Why is this sake named after the Cicada? Maybe my mother in law has a clue, having collected Cicadas and butterflies in her youth in this mountain village, filled with the joy of nature.

From the moment you see this quaint family run restaurant you can sense there is something special. With each step creeping closer to the front of the queue, you can see and smell the smoky charcoal grill on your right with lots of eel being marinated, sometimes literally filling the skies with a pleasant sweet soy aroma.

The specialty here is Nagoya style eel rice with dried nori. The name of this dish is Hitsumabushi and is well known as a Nagoya delicacy. The shop started in 1910 in nearby Nishio city. However, the Anjo shop has now overtaken the original Nishio shop.

The Oirase stream is one of the most famous destinations in Northern Japan. Its fame is totally deserved and, as soon as you make your first step on the river bank, the reason will be clear. In summer the surrounding forest foliage is at its peak. The green is imperious; the delicate and spongy moss covers everything like the snow in winter. The water paints elegant shapes flowing around the tiny islets covered in wide leaf plants.

Oirase stream is amazing in any season. In summer the green color of leaves and moss is unbelievable.
