Bairinji Temple is a palette of pinks come mid-February. Perched on the hillside by the Chikugo river is the temple with the Plum Blossom Garden. Over 500 fragrant plum trees decorate the outer garden while on the inside is a collection of some 600 cultural artifacts. The karamon-style gate leads to the tombs and mausoleums of former lords of the Kurume Domain, which is a magnificent sight in its own right. Step inside the 'Kitchen of Kitakyushu', the charming Tanga Market that has been loved by locals for over 100 years. Inside are around 90 specialty shops, many of which are run by third or fourth generation owners with trading dating back to the origins of the market. The stores provide fresh produce and delicious eats like the popular 'nukadaki', a snack of sardines boiled in rice-bran paste. Other favourites include oden (one-pot dish) and tuna in a cup. Hakata-ori is a distinct, traditional silk fabric pattern from Hakata, derived from a legacy going back 780 years when a local merchant travelled to China and brought back weaving techniques to Japan. Today, the beautiful textiles make the finest kimono sashes, called obi. Woven by hand, a single obi can take up to 6 months to produce. Due to the texture, the sashes are known to make a swishing sound when tied and this effect, the 'singing of the sash', is what distinguishes high-quality Hakata-ori fabrics. 👘 These high-end silks are also reserved for ornamental aprons of Sumo wrestlers in the top two professional Sumo divisions. 📷 IG/bene_fukuoka

Another exciting season has come to Fukuoka city😆Hakata Gion Yamakasa, UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, has a history of over 800 years. Many men run 5km around Hakata area with carrying 1ton's of float on their shoulders. The famous origin of the festival is a monk, Shoichikokushi, was scattering purified water from segakidana (a shelf to set offerings to suffering spirits) to settle down the spreading epidemic. The history of time race is originated from a fighting between two areas back to 330 years ago. Every15th July is the last day of the festival and the final time race starts at 4:59am from Kushida shrine. The reason why not 5:00am is to give one minute to sing a traditional local song “Hakata iwaimedeta” by the first float members, which is only allows to sing. Some people who join the festival tend to take holiday to focus on it.
