JOI welcomes industry businesses, organisations and schools to book in advance special trainings. Schedule winter training & courses AST1, AST2, Backcountry Intro, mountaineering, Wilderness first aid and more. ⛷🏂❄

We were stoked to have the team out for AST1+ training and tour this week > dropped some knowledge, gained some skills and had some fresh powder turns with Tao & Trent!

With conditions the way they are, you can never have enough training and knowledge! We recommend for groups to enquire and book a season in advance to ensure we can cater for you amidst the demand.

It's been great to see so many new faces and awareness on the need to obtain the first step in avalanche & snow safety with groups and individuals getting out and taking their AST1 courses in Hakuba, Myoko, Nozawa, Yuzawa, Madarao and more!

We are now getting well in to the winter season now and already with a month of delivering skills & knowledge on snow and avalanche safety through our introductory - but in depth AST1+ hybrid courses.

Presenting the bulk of theory training in online sessions and self study > which maximises our 2 days in-person to extend this knowledge into practical skills on the snow. In addition providing a more realistic and in deeper introduction to trip planning and group dynamics for our dedicated touring day.

Here's some highlights up until now! We are also aware that there is not enough of us providers out there for the current demand – which is a bitter sweet pill, we hope to open more courses towards the end winter and until then beckon everyone to please stay safe, make good decisions and not travel outside of your experience.

January 10-13 AST2 Hakuba - 4 days intensive training & riding for avalanche safety & betterment! ❄️❄️❄️⛷🏂

Last week we've finished up with our first AST2 - advanced avalanche skills training and the group really became the perfect example of how valuable it is to pursue higher levels of knowledge, collect skills and most importantly learn the key attributes of human group dynamics that will always maximise a brilliant day out on the snow!

AST1 is an introductory step to give a wide portion of knowledge and awareness across many avalanche related factors in the shorter 2 days (+ online) training.
As such it only scrapes the tip of the iceberg to introduce the critical information without overloading participants.
AST2, over 4 days (plus online prep), goes deep into each pillar of information, delivering a comprehensive understanding of avalanche factors to every participant.

Our key goals to achieve for every AST2 participant are advancing :
• Decision Making Process & Skills
• Risk Management & Mitigation
• Concepts of Avalanche Terrain & Snowpack (inc. snow pit analysis)
• Be a Benchmark Leader in Planning & Leading trips
• Build awareness of Safer Travel on Snow & group management
• Learn advanced search techniques & transceiver modes
• Organise & Lead a Multi-Companion Burial
• Understand the Processes of Extrication & Rescue
• Push into wider variety of terrain with stronger skill sets

AST1 Successfully Completes First Mandarin-Led Avalanche Skills Training!
We are thrilled to share the success of our first Chinese Mandarin instructor-led Avalanche Skills Training (AST1)!

With a dedicated group of participants, we delivered our immersive 3-day program designed to provide a deeper introduction to essential avalanche knowledge and skills. Our skilled instructor ensured an engaging learning experience tailored to our new Mandarin-speaking audience.

The program combined in-class theory, hands-on field training, and guided tours, enabling participants to absorb and demonstrate their new skills effectively. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we are proud of what the group has achieved during this transformative training.

We are excited to announce our next Mandarin-led AST1 training, scheduled for February 20–22 in Hakuba & Yuzawa March 11-12.

PMBIA - Level 1 MTB Instructor/Guide Course - Iwatake MTB Park , Nagano 🚴🚵🌱(Eng below)
会場となった白馬岩岳マウンテンリゾートMTBコースにて日本語コースを開講しました。悪天候の中でしたが6名が受講し、みごと全員合格しました。
非常に嬉しいです。みなさんおめでとうございます！
さあ、日本国内で資格発給が始まりました。カリキュラムも日本語訳を使用して行われますので、言語も安心して講習を受講できます。 歴史ある卓越したマウンテンバイクの指導とコーチングを推進するPMBIAの扉をあけましょう！
そして新しいインストラクター達による今後のレッスンを期待してください。

Welcoming the end (almost) to the wet season, we’ve just completed our first ALL JAPANESE LEVEL 1 PMBIA - Mountain bike instructor and guide course!

With our fearless group all passing with flying colours, despite battling some wet days at Iwatake, Hakuba. With ever grateful thanks to be led by Yachiyo ‘Yachan’ Maruyama their PMBIA evaluation instructor.

A big congratulations to all for this endeavour and we wish everyone well on their MTB career path!
