Chugoku Region Tourism Guide

Chugoku Region Tourism Promotion Association（中国地域観光推進協議会） The Chugoku Region has four World Heritage sites,
and boasts a unique traditional culture.

On visiting the region you’ll also discover the delights of its
beautiful nature and tasty food. The Chugoku Region, located at the western edge of Honshu (“Main Island”), is comprised of five prefectures where traditional culture still lives on, as can be seen at its four World Heritage sites – Itsukushima-jinja Shrine, Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, the A-Bomb Dome and the Hagi Reverberatory Furnace

. You can also visit well-preserved historical towns where you might encounter “original scenes of Japan”, almost like a step back in time. You can also enjoy marvelous views at San’inkaigan National Park, which has beautiful landscapes formed by the violent waves of the Sea of Japan; Setonaikai National Park with its innumerable islands dotting the calm Setonaikai Inland Sea, and Daisen-Oki National Park which is famous for Mt. Daisen, the region’s highest mountain. And wherever you go you will be welcomed with delicious local food from both mountain and sea, well-known all over Japan.

In December, illumination events light up various tourist destinations across the Chugoku regions ✨.
Enjoy a magical and otherworldly atmosphere at iconic spots like the Tottori Sand Dunes or Yuushien Garden in Shimane Prefecture.
If you can’t make it to these tourist sites at night, don’t worry! Beautiful light displays can also be found near Okayama Station and along Hiroshima’s Peace Boulevard. Check the websites for details! 😉

The Shimose Art Museum, introduced earlier, has won the top prize in the “Museums” category of the prestigious Prix Versailles, an international French architectural award celebrating the world’s most beautiful buildings ✨✨.
Additionally, in October, Etajima-sou, a hot spring inn in Etajima City, Hiroshima Prefecture, was awarded the world’s highest honor in the Luxury Hot Spring Hotel category at the World Luxury Hotel Awards 2024, often referred to as the Oscars of the hotel industry! 👀

Both facilities are located about an hour by public transportation from central Hiroshima, making them easily accessible. If you visit Hiroshima, be sure to check them out! 😊

There are many delicious wagyu beefs all over Japan, but the one I've been hooked on lately is the brand "Tottori Wagyu Olein 55" from Tottori Wagyu😊
Tottori Prefecture's Wagyu beef has been produced since the Edo period and has been passed down as a good quality Wagyu beef, and the Tottori lineage is known to have a high content of oleic acid, which is the main component of olive oil.
Oleic acid is said to be related to how well beef melts in the mouth, and Tottori Wagyu beef that contains more than 55% oleic acid is branded as "Tottori Wagyu Olein 55"✨

Gakuenji Buddhist Temple is one of the best place to watch the autumn foliage in Shimane🍂🍁
Gakuenji Buddhist Temple is said to have been built in 594 AD by Chishun Shonin, a Buddhist priest from Shinano Province, who arrived at Tabushi Mountain in Izumo City and prayed to the Furo Waterfall to cure Empress Suiko's eye disease, which got cured, and the temple was built in gratitude for his prayers being fulfilled.

Izumo soba is a popular specialty from Shimane Prefecture. 🥢 Especially notable is the warigo soba, which is served in three round vermilion bowls stacked together. ✨

The correct way to eat warigo soba is as follows.
1. Without taking it out of the stack, add condiments and mentsuyu (noodle soup base) to the top bowl.
2. After finishing the first bowl, pour the remaining sauce in the second bowl, then add condiments and mentsuyu as well. Add the first bowl under the stack.
3. Lastly, add condiments and mentsuyu to the third bowl.
