Photos show Sekinoo Falls in Miyazaki Prefecture and Mizonokuchi Cave in Kagoshima Prefecture. We visited both last week because they aren't too far apart. Highly recommend these spots for nature lovers and if you want to escape the crowds. We didn't book our accommodation until on the day (!) but still managed to find somewhere with it's own in-room onsen bath for less than ¥7,000 per person 🤣 Look at the bath!! That isn't dirty water or a dirty bath 😃 The onsen water in that part of Kyushu is exceptionally good quality and the water colour and stained walls and floor show how rich it is in those powerful healthy minerals 🥰

Good and evil, Gods and Goddesses, clowns, dancers, kids and old men. We couldn't have enjoyed ourselves more! A rainy night at one of our local Shinto shrines. The traditional Kagura dance dates back many hundreds of years. It's heartening to see the local community coming together and putting such time and effort into keeping the old traditions alive. As usual, I was the only foreigner in attendance but I was amazed to see a couple of other's actually performing! Thanks to everybody at Idebiki Shrine in K**a city here in Fukuoka prefecture for all their time and effort. We'll be there next year too!

PS: this shrine is most famous for their summer Lion Dance; our video of previous year here: https://youtu.be/quVWdzYJscY?si=1z93KIWm5nVI1rsF Leave a comment if you want details of this year's Lion Dance schedule.

We skipped the spring pottery fair at Arita because we didn't fancy rubbing shoulders with 1 million other people - yes, you read that right 😵‍ Instead, we got off the beaten pottery track here on Kyushu and visited the charming little pottery village of Mikawachi. They have been producing pottery there for 400 years and it is famed for its classic Japanese Blue and white porcelain. We stayed for eight hours, and even missed the last shuttle bus back we were so engrossed 😆 Luckily one of the potters was kind enough to take us back in his car. We picked up some exquisite pieces (even though we don't really have room for any more pottery!) so watch this space because we will be releasing a video soon. We are also working on a Kyushu pottery tour - something that we've had in mind for AGES! Meantime, just check out these pics. If you really love Kyushu pottery and want to escape the crowds leave a comment or drop us a message to be the first to know when tour details are released 😉

Never stop learning! Experienced potters Gily and Nadav took a 4-hour pottery tour with our company director Moo around Koishiwara village. She introduced them to a 15th generation pottery family who were kind enough to share some hands-on techniques. Look! The future 16th generation Koishiwara potter (still in kindergarten!) is passing on some tips to Gily and Nadav's next generation too 😂Check out Studio Davka - סטודיו דווקא עיצוב קרמי to see Gily and Nadav's current style ... then check back in a few months to see if you can see the influence of rural Kyushu-style in their latest designs 🙂

The weird world of Tsuetate Onsen 🤪 This is one of our favourite off the beaten path onsen towns here on Kyushu. We visited at night a few days ago and at this time of year the carp banners are streaming along the river (they signify the strength of male children in a family). Of course we took a hot spring bath (¥500 per person) and steamed our own dinner in the free of charge onsen steaming baskets dotted around town - we had eggs, sweet potato and fresh bamboo shoot. The eggs really do taste different to the ones you cook at home 😋 Leave a comment below if you need more info 👇

Ramen, kaiseki dinner (multi-course Japanese meal featuring local autumn ingredients), tempura, soba, charcoal-grilled fish, unagi (eel) and so much more 🤤. Autumn cuisine in Japan is incomparable.

Moo is an expert on delicious food -- and she never misses, especially for our autumn tour.

Attention photographers 📸 Look how photogenic Udo Jingu Shrine is in Miyazaki! We took all these photos in different parts of this one big shrine complex. Some of the nooks and crannies we found were so out of the way we didn't even see any Japanese there 😄 Look at the photo of the car park! When we arrived it was totally full but we spent so long messing around with the camera that we were the very last to leave 🤣 Get yer camera and come to Kyushu 😍

Following on from our post yesterday about the hidden gem tofu restaurant, let me share some pictures we took during our visit to Tsukumi City, a delightful little seaside town. Nestled along the serene coast of Oita Prefecture, it's one of the very best places in Kyushu for tuna 🐟 Look how rich and fatty our tuna lunch looks! Its reputation draws seafood enthusiasts (including us!) from far and wide, though we didn't see any foreigners there at all.

By the way, don't be confused by the sakura pictures 🌸. Along with its seafood, Tsukumi is also one of the best places for early-blooming cherry blossom species.

P.S: Those aren't weird-looking locals. They're life size dolls we came across in a friendly local's back garden 🤣

Wasn't Moo lucky having all these young handsome boys all to herself 🤣 It's a bit off the tourist trail but if you ever visit the sleepy little town of Akizuki (Fukuoka Prefecture) why don't you do what we did? Lunch at this tiny mom n pop tofu restaurant (that is actually Michelin listed!!) followed by dessert a few minutes drive away at a lovely rustic cafe run by a friend of ours. Drop a message below if you're interested and I'll try to dig out the Google maps link. Happy to support these little local places 🥰

Not sure where to start- so many highlights. All the food suggestions and places were phenomenal! We loved the roadside diners which were just delicious, unexpected and great value! The temples / ruins and shrines in the forests were beautiful and discovering them with no other people around made it just extra special! The ease of the map codes and the driving were easy and pleasurable! The timings for each day were spot on. The Beppu tour guide / steam lunch and walk was fantastic! All of the Ryokens were just great!! We were the only people in 2 of them. The accommodation/ food and service were just great. Trip was just incredible.

Kind words from David & Jen 🥰

Tonight, we had the pleasure of experiencing an authentic Kaiseki meal at Chosetsu-An in Karatsu. The dishes, many skillfully cooked over charcoal, were faultless. The dashi, prepared with freshly grated katsubushi, added a rich umami flavor. One of many highlights was the smooth, creamy purple uni, paired with real, freshly grated wasabi that added just the right kick. Each dish was served on an array of quality pottery, enhancing the overall experience. To complement the meal, we enjoyed tea from Yame, Kyoto, and Ureshino. A bonus for international visitors, they speak English here, making the experience even more welcoming. This place is a must-visit for any Kyushu visitor who appreciates genuine Japanese cuisine. Happy to recommend 🥰

Onsen life ☺️ Some moments are meant to be savored in silence. Here, the world fades away, leaving only the warmth of the waters, the soft whisper of the wind, and a tranquil heart.

Nestled in a peaceful upland, a short distance from Yufuin’s bustling centre, Yufuin Yasuha Onsen is a hidden gem. It boasts 19 guest rooms, 11 with private open-air baths. The ryokan's blue-colored springs are a rare find, promising a unique bathing experience. The hydrogen carbonate spring water, known for its skin-nourishing properties, turns a mesmerizing blue as it reacts with the air.

Escape the hustle, and dip into serenity ❤️

Whenever we pass nearby Ogi town we always head to mum's favourite yokan shop: 八頭司伝吉本舗 小城本店Steeped in history, this shop offers a genuine taste of Japanese heritage through its sweets.

They specialize in crafting yokan, a traditional Japanese jellied dessert made from red bean paste, known for its delicate sweetness and smooth texture.

It's a delightful stop for those interested in experiencing the subtleties of authentic Japanese flavors, particularly appealing to travelers seeking a cultural culinary experience.

One photo shows the tea and samples we were presented with as soon as we entered the shop; the other shows Moo, Kyushu Journeys taster-in-chief 😂

Thanks to the team at Ōita Prefecture for showing us around Enowa Yufuin (in Yufuin of course). It styles itself as a "botanical retreat" with a focus on farm-to-table. You can tell by the pics it's pricey with each room having own private onsen and nice scenic views and super-chic design. We even met the farmer and wandered around his fields 😊 Unfortunately we didn't get invited for an overnight stay 😀 Recommend this place for a special occasion with a person you love ❤️

What a day we had kindly hosted by a local fisherman! An exciting boat ride to his scallop farm (not exactly scallop but something similar). His knowledge and passion shone through. The freshly cooked scallop was extraordinarily tasty - in fact we ate it exactly as it was from the pot without any sauce or condiment required. He even has a little homestay on his little island 🥰 Thanks to Visit Oita - Japan for arranging
