Hiwasa Hachiman Shrine Autumn Festival (October 12, 13th)

This weekend, get ready for Minami Town's most breathtaking celebration, the Hiwasa Hachiman Aki Matsuri! This two-day festival has honored the year’s harvest and big catch since ancient times, and it’s just spectacular!

The highlight? Massive chosa floats - each weighing a whopping one tonne (2204 lbs.) - carried through the streets by 50 people. Each district has its own uniquely decorated float, with colorful costumes and vibrant cheers echoing through the town!

After parading through the town, the festival reaches its climax as the chosa carriers march to Ohama Beach and, in a breathtaking moment, dive into the sea - floats and all! Last year, even though the rain poured down, the spirit of the festival was unstoppable. Despite the weather, the streets were packed with smiling faces, laughter, and celebration, showing that nothing can dampen the joy of this festival.

From children drumming to elders carrying the chosa, and women preparing food for all, this festival is truly a community affair. It brings together friends, families, past and present residents for a joyful celebration.

Join us this weekend, October 12, 13th for the unforgettable experience of the Hiwasa Hachiman Autumn Festival! 📍 Where: Shikoku, Tokushima Prefecture, Minami Town, Hiwasa Hachiman Shrine, Ohama Beach.
📅When: second weekend of October, in 2024 it’s October 12, 13th

Kenka Danjiri Festival, Tachibana, Anan City, Tokushima Prefecture, Shikoku

Get ready for the clash of the titans at the Tachibana Kenka Danjiri Festival!

In the first days of October, the air in Anan fills with excitement as the danjiri from the four Tachibana districts collide in a spectacular show of strength and tradition. It’s a celebration of bravery, craftsmanship, and community spirit!

Having a long history, the festival began as a way to pray for safe voyages and bountiful catches. The danjiri, beautifully crafted to resemble ships, serve as a testament to the region's maritime legacy. With lacquered roofs, intricate carvings, and vibrant lanterns, these floats are truly magnificent!

At around 7 PM, the excitement kicks off! As the call of “I-sanjae!” (be brave) rings out, the danjiris are pulled back as far back as possible, and with a thunderous shout of “modosse!” (bring back), they collide in a dramatic display that sends vibrations through the crowd. The clashes continue for five exhilarating hours, culminating in the floats entering the shrine around midnight.

While the danjiri battles are the highlight, the festival also features a rich array of cultural performances.
Observe ceremonies, traditional songs and dances such as Kadozuke, Yadoburi, Miko Dance, Shishimai Lion’s Dance, Mikoshi Parade.

📅 When: October 1-3 *Danjiri Collision will be carried out only on first two days of the festival
📍 Where: Around the historic roads of Tachibana-cho, Anan City

Bring family and friends to immerse in this unique cultural experience! Capture memories, enjoy the festivities, and feel the energy of the Tachibana Kenka Danjiri Festival. This celebration is a wonderful opportunity to honor traditions and create lasting memories!

Urayasu no mai - Dance of Shrine Maidens Miko, Minami Town, Tokushima Prefecture, Shikoku

Last year at the Matsuri Convention in Minami Town, we had the incredible opportunity to immerse ourselves in the rich traditions of Southern Tokushima.

One of the standout moments was witnessing the stunning Urayasu no Mai, performed by the skilled Miko (shrine maidens) from Anan’s Haura Shrine. This traditional dance, whose name translates to "peace of mind," is more than just a performance - it’s a heartfelt prayer for peace and harmony.

The Urayasu no Mai, with its graceful movements and serene elegance, is a beautiful expression of devotion and peace. It continues to be a cherished part of the shrine’s annual festivals, bringing its calming presence to the community throughout the year.

Take Akari Bamboo Lantern Making Workshop, Kaiyo Town, Tokushima Prefecture, Shikoku

Discover the magic of Take Akari - beautiful bamboo lanterns crafted with traditional artistry!
Recently, we had the incredible opportunity to create our own Take Akari lanterns. Choosing our designs and drilling patterns, we dove into a hands-on workshop that made two hours fly by! And the lanterns that we made bring us joy every time we look at it, and I’m already dreaming of making a few more for my home! ^^

But more about the materials:
Bamboo, once a vital part of daily life, has become an environmental challenge as it can grow invasively, causing damage and increasing the risk of landslides. one of the solutions of that problem would be to utilize the plants as valuable natural resources.

Take no hana is leading the way by turning abandoned bamboo into beautiful, eco-friendly lanterns and installations. Their work not only addresses the bamboo problem but also infuses our spaces with traditional charm and sustainable beauty. たけの花

Goryobashi Chopsticks Making Hands-On, Kito, Naka Town, Tokushima Prefecture, Shikoku

Deep in the mountains of Naka Town, we crafted our very own pair of chopsticks – and they’re anything but ordinary! Introducing Goryobashi 五稜箸, or "Five-Ridges Chopsticks," designed to be extremely light and incredibly easy to hold.

Their unique pentagon shape represents the five mountains of the five villages that came together to form Naka Town. Each corner symbolizes a piece of this beautiful landscape.

Made from Kito cedar wood, these chopsticks are not just a culinary tool but a symbol of sustainable forestry practices. Properly felling these trees helps keep the mountains healthy, reduces the risk of natural disasters, and ensures that no wood goes to waste.

Escape the heat and humidity with the crystal-clear rivers of Southern Tokushima! Their cool waters refresh both body and mind, while the stunning views will stay with you long after your visit. Look at the color of those waters! Deeper it gets, deeper is the azure tint – so be careful when stepping in, it is often much deeper than it looks.
There are a lot of shallow spots with slow current to dip in, and if you bring a snorkel mask, you can observe a lot of fish and even the freshwater shrimps. So exciting!

Shishikui Beach, Kaiyo Town, Tokushima Prefecture, Japan

Kaiyo Town is the perfect summer getaway, with its cool ocean breeze offering a refreshing break from the heat. It also brings back fond memories of a summer event from a few years ago - filled with laughter and juicy watermelons.

A summer cultural exchange event brought together kids from a local school and a group of amazing Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) for a fun-filled game of Suikawari!
Suikawari, or “watermelon splitting,” is a beloved Japanese summer tradition. It’s all about teamwork, laughter, and, of course, enjoying a delicious watermelon.

Here’s how it works:
Participants are blindfolded, spun around using the stick as a pivot, and then guided by their teammates to take a swing at the watermelon with a wooden stick. The excitement of wandering, the calls in English to help them find their way, and the final swing make for a hilarious and memorable experience.

Cape Kamoda, Anan, Tokushima prefecture, Shikoku, Japan

Discover the “Poem of Waves” monument at Cape Kamoda, the easternmost tip of Shikoku Island, where the wind and waves come alive in a stunning display. They say that couples who gaze into the monument’s heart-shaped center together can glimpse their future. The endless blue of the ocean stretches out before you, mesmerizing and hard to look away from.

A white lighthouse stands proudly on the cliff, creating a striking contrast against the deep blue of the sky and sea. On clear days, you can catch sights of Wakayama’s Hinomisaki Cape, the Onaruto Bridge, and Awaji Island, with tiny Ishima Island floating in the distance.

Cape Kamoda is the first place on Shikoku Island to greet the sunrise, offering a breathtaking dawn view. There’s a special beauty and a touch of melancholy as the lighthouse’s last light fades and the sun rises from the ocean.

Recharge your spirit by strolling along the rugged beach or soaking in Kamoda Onsen’s open-air hot springs with a panoramic ocean view.

This weekend, July 28th (Sunday) in Mugi Town, Tokushima Prefecture, Shikoku Island

Vibrant and eccentric Himegami Festival

Step into the rich tapestry of Mugi Oshima's history with the Himegami festival – a heartfelt tribute to love and the sea. Legend tells of a princess from Tosa, torn apart from her beloved by duty, who tragically met her end in the ocean. A rock of a male symbol shape is said to have appeared after the princess threw herself into the sea, so sailors began dedicating male symbols to a shrine on the island, seeking solace for her spirit.

Today, this ancient tradition blossoms into a vibrant and eccentric festival. It starts with a procession from Hachiman Shrine through the town to the harbor, where the symbolic mikoshi sets sail for Mugi Oshima for the Shinto ceremony. Experience the spectacle as decorated boats accompany this sacred journey, reflecting enduring ties to maritime safety.

But the festivities don't end there! Join in the spirited celebration featuring Awa Odori dance and music performances, and don’t miss spectacular fireworks display against the night sky. It's a chance to immerse yourself in local traditions and feel the pulse of community spirit.

Come along and witness firsthand how this festival, born from sorrow, now brings joy and unity to all who participate. Let's celebrate together!

9:30~ Shinto ritual (Hachiman Shrine)
10:00~ Himegami and children's mikoshi parade (Hachiman Shrine)
13:00~ Sea parade ticket sales
14:00~ Sea parade
16:00~ Himegami market

This is one of our favourite spots to enjoy blooming hydrangeas. Located in a rustic area of Anan City, it has the best access – just a few minutes’ walk from JR Aratano Station.

When driving through those quiet rural roads in early summer, you can't miss those big clusters of blue, pink, and purple blooms popping up against the green backdrop of rice fields and mountains. You can't help but feel mesmerized by their sheer variety and how they seem to thrive effortlessly in these quiet corners of Japan. Whether you're into flowers or not, seeing those hydrangeas in full bloom is a sight that sticks with you.
Next time you find yourself out in Southern Tokushima during early summer, keep an eye out for those hydrangeas. Trust me, you won't regret it.
