The precincts of Sanzenin have long been constituted as a sanctuary between the streams 'Ryosen' and 'Rissen'. This time, beautiful views of scattered autumn leaves could be found along the Ryosen stream.

In Kyoto, this is late autumn. And here we can already see signs of the next season. Winter-flowering camellias. Sometimes, if you look at the garden from a microscopic (not literally, but as a way of appreciating the garden) perspective, the bigger picture emerges. A fallen leaf, the direction of the moss waves, the way the wind blows etc…

The day was sunny, but it rained for a short while. The fallen leaves, wet from the rain, became colourful and looked beautiful in the moss garden.

The monk said, 'It's the rain of Kanro'. In Buddhism, when Buddhist spirits save people, they send their teachings down like rain to guide them to nirvana. The mercy of the spirits at this time is called 'Kanro-rain'.

The vividness of the rain revives the moment when the colours recede in the deepening autumn. It is aptly called the rain of Kanro.

I have a favourite tree in the precincts of Sanzenin.

It is not so much the tree as its branches that I like. The tree stands in front of the main hall, Ojogokurakuin, with the old red gate in the background. In this way, when you admire a garden, it is good to find trees, streams of water and curves of paths that suit your own sensibilities. Such things can serve as beacons to illuminate the changing seasons, times and one's own changing state of mind.

Yuseien Garden as a Sabi garden. Sabi, a uniquely Japanese aesthetic, is simply put, the beauty of decline.

In Buddhism, it is the sense of accepting the transience of existence and the coming to an end of things as beautiful, and is seen as the pathway to the fundamental Buddhist idea of ‘all things are impermanent’. This is broadly considered to be part of ‘enlightenment’.

How would you feel knowing that the autumn leaves are at their peak in this garden? Wouldn’t some essential beauty speak to you, something more than just surface beauty?

My job is to organise tours for foreign tourists. During the flowering and foliage seasons, I want the participants to enjoy the height of the season. However, this desire has somehow made my sense of aesthetics boring.

This is the sixth visit to Sanzenin in this year's foliage season alone. This year's visits were less satisfactory as it was difficult to distinguish the peak season. This time, on 11 December, it was clearly past its peak season and there were few tourists.

And in that tranquil precinct, I literally gasped. All at once, long-forgotten sensations came back to me.

Kyoto on Foot spin-off: Otsu. While Kyoto’s Gion Festival is one of the largest festivals in Japan, the Otsu Festival is a more human-sized festival. It retains the atmosphere of a traditional, community-based festival with a strong sense of fun and grace, and many of my friends who went with me felt more connected to this festival.

Next year, this festival will be added to my tour route. I hope you will enjoy it with me.
